The 975 is slated to support Conroe however, the current 975 that is out now will not. The reason is, they do not have the lower voltage requirements for Conroe.

Intel is supposed to put out a revision for the 975 so it will support Conroe at its release. Keep an eye out for the revision. Additionally, they will be releasing a new chipset solely for Conroe and I believe that will be the 965.

Intel used 975x chipset with Conroe for the benchmarks at IDF against FX-60. So, yes.. 975x will support conroe.. How ever, as said before the
VRM on the motherboard has to support low voltages for the conroe.
x965 series chipset will be the new chipset with lot of new features, that
would support conroe. The new chipset will be on 90nm and run cooler.

Intel did use a 975x chipset but I thought it had been modified for the test. From my understanding, if the motherboard manufacturers used Intel's reference design, the 975x chipset would not be able to support Conroe chips but I could be wrong. I believe to be safe I would wait until the revision or the new chipsets.

I cannot picture 975 supporting Conroe because of how different it will be. I think it would make good sense if we saw a different chipset for Conroe, but I would defer to the Intel experts and time to see what will actually be.

Intel used a D975XBX at the IDF. i965 and I985 chipsets are coming. The 965 will be out when conroe is.

All 975 boards could run conroe with BIOS support. The VRM may not give exact voltage but close enough. So it's just a matter of if they release a new BIOS.
