Consistent cricket/coil noise from GTX 970

I am getting a constant noise from my Zotac GTX 970. It is similar to that of a cricket (somewhat high frequency). Didn't notice much initially but when I did, it is starting to get annoying. I faced it with my previous Zotac 970 as well as Asus 960 prior to getting this one. I don't think it is from the PSU as I opened and checked the noise source and found it coming from the graphics card.

Also one interesting find is that there is no loud whine as I saw on some videos while playing heavy graphics games. Its just the same chirp/cricket noise. Is it an issue with the card such that it has to be RMAed? Thanks!!

My PC specs are:

i5 2400
DP67BA mobo
Antec VP550 W PSU
Zotac GTX 970
16 GB 1333 RAM.

Solution
Coil whine is a huge issue when it comes to 970 cards across all brands. Sadly, there is not much you can do except either return it or put up with the noise. You could buy a silent case with noise-blocking pads if it bothers you too much, or you could just email Zotac support about it.

I read somewhere that series 900 cards are all affected by this whine. Guess need to put up with this one as could end up getting the same issue after an RMA.

not like the 970 the rest are few and far between if any at all 970 is not a true NVidia card

''Furthermore, as we mentioned in our GTX 980 review, GTX 970 has been a pure virtual (no reference card) launch, which means all of NVIDIA’s partners are launching their custom cards right out of the gate. A lot of these have been recycled or otherwise only slightly modified GTX 700/600 series designs, Meanwhile since NVIDIA did not produce reference cards, for GTX 970 reviewers are being sampled directly by NVIDIA’s partners.''

all you got is what cant make a 980 that's a true NVidia card and slapped together to make a sale with out chunking things in the trash [opinion]

Is it for the PSU or gfx card? Could you please tell me how to adjust the same?

But the great thing about this card is that its able to handle all the intense games I threw at it without much sweat like GTA 5, Assassins Creed Unity, Splinter Cell Blacklist, Tomb Raider, etc despite my slightly old CPU. If not for the coil noise would have been the best bang for the buck. BTW I also read some people facing the whine with GTX 980 Ti.

Agree. 970 is the most affected one. Sadly stuck to this :??:

well ther good running cards and all but too much controversy with them like the memory thing and coil whine and what I posted above and so on

right from the release I seen I cant see spending that kinda money on something like that and what am I really spending my money on with it , but that's just me

lots of folks call me stupid and bashed me and all saying what I do on them but the thing is my money is still in my billfold and not in that risk of a card like that
lots of folks are well happy with there's and think there the greatest all I can do is call it as I see it

sorry I was no better help but good luck

msi afterburner for your gpu, unlock voltage control and try lowering and raising it and testing with say occt after to make sure it is stable

I don't understand what happened, but I didn't switch on the PC for more than 2 days as I had left the city and returned today morning. I found that the whine is no longer present (was present in idle mode as well before). Not sure if it is temporary or the card crossed the break-in period (if any) 😛. Will post updates if I find any changes.

Had been testing my card and found that the whine returned a few days after my last post. However, one good thing about the whine is that it keeps mosquitoes at bay (probably due to the high frequency it emits). No mosquitoes dared come over me whenever my PC was ON.

But then, after a week or 2, the whine seems to be totally muffled/disappeared. No more noise after running it for many days. It seems the cricket inside will die out after a long bout of chirping 😉
