Consistently crashing with PC Games

Hi Everyone, I need expert and empirical advice. I built a PC based on a TigerDirect bare bones deal, and i've been upgrading since. In the past my wife has played her Sims 3 and 4 with issues such as freezing or crashing. I thought it was her custom content. But now my games such as War Thunder are crashing. THey crash at random times so there doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason yet. I have recieved the blue screen a couple times, but it dissapears too fast, and i've attempted to recover the error codes, but windows didn't record anything.

I Have recently wiped my entire hard drive, and reloaded just the basics such as drivers, games and AVG and the PC still crashes only while playing games.

Here is what I'm working with:
Windows 8.1
AMD Phenom II X4 945 Processor
Samsung Hard Drive 8500 SSD EVO 500GB
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 Graphics card
8 Gigs of RAM
mother borad is M5A78L-M_LX PLUS (Updated Bios already)
Also updated the power supply recently to cppl max with 115-230v input. My Previous Diablo Tek didn't support the new graphics card.

Thank you again!

Any advice/help is greatly appreciated.

Solution
you could try that. when HDD/SDD cannot be detected by mobo it is possible the drive are not powered. it will be easier to check if the drive is powered or not with HDD because during start up HDD will start spinning. you can try hearing the spinning sound or try place you hand on top of the drive to feel the vibration (some HDD are near silent even when spinning). but if the HDD indeed working but still not detected then it could be mobo problem. my old Asus mobo also have problem detecting drive on certain SATA slot.

as for gpu i don't know if not enough power could lead to crash. but from my own experience in the past running GPU with cheap PSU that could not supply enough power to the card lead to total system freeze. my PC did...

Blue screen was happening before I reformatted everything. Thank you for the Memtest86 recommendation! I ran it, but no faults. Kind of bitter sweet there.

My version of graphic driver is 9.18.13.5306

Maybe it's worth noting that after I ran the memtest and logged into the PC, it locked up and nothing but the mouse was responding. Wasn't playing a game, was logging in to reply to this message.

Thank you renz, thats a good suggestion. I haven't yet. I updated it again last night to the newest update, and still crashed. I was reading up about the GTX 970 and how it's had some harsh criticism regarding it's memory. I"m wondering if I fiddle with a few settings on it, to see if it will make a difference, along with attempting an older driver.

I'll let you know what happens.

OK, so far no go with an older driver, and no go with the newest driver. I"m not sure how far back on the drivers I should have gone, but I tried the May release 2015, still locked up.

This last lock-up with the latest driver allowed me to Ctrl-alt-DEL back to a "PLease Wait" screen, which eventually took me to a "please reboot and select proper boot device" Which led to Bios telling me to reconfigure settings, or use defaults. Took me on a journey, but now i'm back up.

Not sure if this is a Graphics card issue, HDD or Processor?

seems like your mobo can't properly detect your hard drive. does that happen from time to time? what is your exact PSU model? also when installing driver try only installing graphic driver and physx driver only. to be exact i also have game instability with the latest WHQL 353.30 (not the hotfix driver). but after installing grahic driver and physx driver only it seems working fine for me.

Thank you Renz, yes it does give me a hard time. I would say about 1 out of every 10 boot ups I have issues, especially after a crash. I have to hold the power button or else I'll be stuck watching the Asus splash screen.

I will try the custom install tonight. Any thoughts for testing the mobo?

Solution
Thank you for the reply Renz, from what I was reading regarding this PSU and the GTX 970, the PSU doesn't push out enough AMPS, especially when the card draws more power to in moments it needs it, the PSU just can't handle it and fails some where along the line to keep the system afloat. I should change the title to game freezing instead of crashing because it freeze's, but I said Crash because it forces me to do a hard restart.

I think you're spot on though, I didn't realize how much there was to a PSU until I started really looking into it. I ruled it out as not being an option because it had the Wattage, but not the AMPS. I'll update this thread once I get my hands on a new PSU (should be a couple weeks). Thank you for your input Renz!

Quick update, I sat and waited to see what would happen after it froze, I recieved a quick blue screen flash that stated "Critical Process Died". Now I know this can be a multitude of things, but would this rule out PSU?

Alright, quick update. I installed a Corsair 750W Power Supply, and it still crashed, BUT my PC failed to start and gave me an error stating "Overclocking Failed, change your settings in BIOS to proceed" So I went into BIOS, found that the BIOS was setup to Automatically decide when it will over clock all cores. I disabled OC and I was able to play War Thunder without any issues.

I think so too, there was an option to enable "Beast Mode" which I thought was hilarious because surronding all of the options are technical terms and jargon, but here you have "Beast Mode". BUt it does give a strong WARNING that i t may cause instability.

After disabling it's ability to overclock, no issues as of yet. It was actually running a little smoother than usual as well.

The MOBO wasn't expensive so I don't expect it to be able to O.C. and I didn't want it to in the first place. But so far so good! Thank you for your help RENZ! Once the wife plays her Sims 3 game, then i'll really know if it's good. She said she was able to play longer than normal with the new PSU, but it had still crashed. But that was before disabling the OC.
