Hey,
Thanks for answering, I appreciate it. Can be very hard to find support sometimes. From my understanding and I am no expert, I have the 60gb version that has the actual ps2 like processor inside so it's basically like I have a mini ps2 inside so firmware wouldn't affect it. I could be wrong about firmware not affecting it though. I'm willing to consider everything. Some guy on Ebay though is selling refurbiahed ones that explicitly states that his has firmware 3.55 on it and will not accept for return one that has upgraded thefirmware. So that makes me think there may be something more. I'm not too sure how I could revert to earlier firmware though but I'll look. This system however says the system is up to date though with version 4.80 I believe. Going to try option 5 now in safe mode because I saw it mentioned online somewhere that if it gets stuck in a file corrupted/rebuild loop this is the thing to do. I don't have anything to back up so I'm not worried.

5 minutes later. For some reason choosing option 5 from the safe mode didn't work and all it did was restore the default settings..strange. However, choosing system restore under system settings in the dashboard did work and it says it will take about 3.5 hours. I don't mind additional troubleshooting.

I dont want to play ps2 games on my ps2, I want to play them on this, don't suggest just forgetting the thing and buying a ps2. I know my preferences and options better than you might think.

4 hours later after system restore finished. Still wont play ps2 games and I tried using component cables and the same thing. Some guy posted this on the playstation forums but I cant understand how it would apply to me and why so many seem to think this. I mean, you can still download ps2 games and play them.
"They removed the function to play ps2 games on all ps3's via a update quite awhile ago"

Damn, I messed up and hit "pick as solution." I have the correct one, cecha001 with 4 usb ports. Plays everything BUT ps2. Bought it used from original owner who only played ps3 games on it and rarely at that. It's in very good condition other than the ps2 part not working. Some guy on ifixit thinks it might be something to do with the laser but I'm not sure.

Former 60GB PS3 owner here, bought it at launch.
So basically all the launch PS3s (20GB version and 60GB version) were backward compatible with PS2 games CECHA001 and CECHA002 had PS2 emulation through Hardware and the CECHA003 version had PS2 hardware emulation through software. Firmware affects only the CECHA003 version but they never blocked PS2 emulation in any of the firmware updates but this wouldnt affect you at all since you have CECHA001.

They guy you are mentioning on ebay wants to keep the 3.55 firmware on his PS3 because AFAIK that was the last stable firmware where piracy was still possible. They basically modified the 3.55 firmware to allow pirated games to be played on the console. Yet again firmware update would never block PS2 emulation support on the 20gb and 60gb PS3.

What happens exactly when you pop in a PS2 game and what kind of cables are you using to connect the console with the TV?

Hi,
Sorry it took me so long to respond. I was feeling a bit hopeless about finding any help and decided to check again. Basically the screen turns black and that's it. Machine stays on with blue and green lights. Can't hit ps3 button to take me back to dashboard. Have to push and hold power button to power off. Tried using both hdmi and component cables. Messed with video, display, game settings on ps3 and settings on tv. It plays everything except ps2. CD, DVD, bluray, ps1, ps3. Some guy over on ifixit.com thinks the laser might need to be replaced and recommends just installing a new drive instead rather than just the laser. I'' determined to fix the problem and enjoy troubleshooting.
