[SOLVED] Constant crashes and BSOD

Hello everyone!

So, if you like puzzles i'm certain you'll like this one...
Since 2 days or so, my PC started having problems like it used to have 2 or 3 months ago.
Games just randomly close like i killed the process in the task manager, when watching videos on YT and doing something else e.g. running a program / moving files to an USB the PC just BSOD. Also, just when these problems started my Browser (Opera/Chrome) tabs specifically kept crashing.

PC Specs:

OS: Win10 Pro

CPU: Alderlake i9-12900K

Mainboard: Gigabyte Z690 Aorus Elite DDR-4

PSU: 750 Watt be quiet! Straight Power 11 Modular 80+ Gold

GPU: Nvidia Geforce RTX 3080ti Msi Trio 12GB

RAM: 32GB GSkill Ripjaw DDR4 ; 2x16GB

For Minidump files =>
https://1drv.ms/u/s!AgNhThPtLIrOgWTJyfun6f7SOy6t?e=Uq637Y

The 2 oldest dump files should be without XMP and the latest 2 with XMP.
The XMP profile seems to disable itself after a crash, probably because the setting isn't saved since i didn't restart right after enabling the profile.

I've had like a couple different BSOD so far,
KERNEL_SECURITY_FAILURE
MEMORY_MANAGEMENT

are the two i still remember.

Theres multiple warnings in the Eventviewer and i don't know if you really need to know what's written in there.
Memtest86 and the Windows Tool didn't find any problems with the RAM.
I got a couple warnings that something was wrong with my C: drive, tried multiple fixes and i don't think anything has changed.

I have updated the bios yesterday and all the other drivers are up to date aswell.
I've tried with and without XMP profile. After a clean Windows install + Disabled XMP profile, the system seemed to be stable for like a month or two, until i ran Path of Exile in combination with 2 Autohotkey scripts, which led to my PC to BSOD like 1 or 2 weeks ago. Not too sure if this game could be the cause of this though lol

Something fun that happened yesterday too:
I was watching a YT video and moving files to an USB stick to prepare for a clean Windows install. While doing so, right at the end when almost all files were transfered, my mouse + keyboard stopped working and the video and audio were slowing down. Just like when i'd watch at 20% speed. Man i really hope someone can help me i'm getting really frustrated and desperate at this point, since this PC wasn't cheap but i only run into problems with it.

Thank you in advance for your valuable time and help!
Kind regards from germany!

Solution
last bugcheck was running a game, the video memory manager was doing some cleanup and there was a error. here is a description of the error:

In the process of decrementing the reference counts for an I/O space region, its accounting node could not be found. Typically this means the argument range was never locked or has already been unlocked. Parameter 2 is the base I/O frame. Parameter 3 is the number of pages in the region, and parameter 4 is the specific I/O frame whose node could not be found.

it could mean that the area was already free. or the address was wrong for some reason.

maybe you can isolate the problem to graphics. it looks like you have the cpu graphics and nvidia. maybe pull your nvidia card and run on the cpu...

victim of number 2 is Volume Shadow Copy. I don't see it or Pool corruption errors very often

I got a couple warnings that something was wrong with my C: drive, tried multiple fixes and i don't think anything has changed.
its only detail missing from post, what make/model drive is C?
what other storage do you have?

Page fault and Attempted write are probably driver errors. Both happened after CPU tried to access ram
I don't see any actions with page files in errors, so hard to say its drives.

do you use an Apple device?

not really needed otherwise.

I dont use an Apple device but i used an apple cable to connect to my XBOX Series X controller. But i've read that the AppleCharger.sys comes with Gigabyte somehow? I deactivated the service now though.

I have now updated both of these drivers again, just to be safe.
I will try to remove AppleCharger.sys and CtiIo64.sys now.

So it all comes back to my RAM?
Opera tabs keep crashing, telling me it's because of 'Lack of memory'.

I will try and stresstest my PC soon, thank you by the way!

Edit: Apparently my PC crashed yesterday when i went to the bathroom right before i went to sleep, i think i was on YouTube and downloading a game =>

its a utility on the gigabyte website for motherboard, its offered on most Gigabyte boards.

Path of exile not known (by me) to cause crashes but its been a few years since I even tried it.

Is ram from same set?

You can run Magician on NVMe, as well as install Samsung Nvme drivers (they on same page) - https://semiconductor.samsung.com/consumer-storage/support/tools/

doesn't look like its the drive though
YDCEtP6.jpg

looks familiar, mines just a little older.

I am not leaning towards it being anything yet. 2 could be drivers but its not revealing enough to me to be able to tell you which.

Yes, both RAM sticks are from the same set.

I installed the driver but can't install Magician.
Looks like my downloads often times are corrupted (I had to re-download Magician 4 times until i gave up), possibly linked to my Browser tabs crashing due to 'Lack of memory' ?

Edit: My Eventviewer shows me that everything with Malwarebytes keeps crashing, i disabled it for now.

I have maybe 12 tabs open. The last time i ran into these problems, my tabs kept crashing too due to 'Lack of memory'.
I can ensure you though, that my tabs should not be crashing because of the 'lack' of RAM. (Sorry that this is in german)

Yes i did update all the drivers that you posted :)
I disabled Malwarebytes and now i was able to download Magician without corrupting the source file and i successfully installed it.
My tabs don't seem to be crashing anymore too, but i'm not sure if the problem really lies with Malwarebytes. I will do a fresh install for it.

Btw. here's another dump file from yesterday: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AgNhThPtLIrOgWUmr2DzwC3MN76o?e=AxyhxW

But Malwarebytes has been running on my rig for months, how is it just now that it is acting up?

Can the inital BSOD cause files to corrupt? Be it system32, Malwarebytes or other programs?

Malwarebytes may have updated itself, I recall mine did a few days ago. So its possible it was a corrupted install.

the opera crash could be it, the volume shadow copy as well, since Malwarebytes protects files.
I don't really know what windows was doing when other 2 happened.

Hi i'm back. Almost the same problems after many many hours of trial and error.
Even tried out to make this work on Win11.

Under heavy load (Chrome with 20 tabs / Warhammer 3 / Idle Game open) after about 15-20 minutes, programs start closing one after another. Something like this:
Idle game closes down, i re-open the game. Half a minute later the browser crashes and starts acting up and shortly after Warhammer 3 follows. Re-opening the browser keeps crashing to desktop. When i restarted the PC, the PC BSOD when it was almost done with the restart.

Has it been doing it ever since the last post or are they the only 2 occurrences?

I ask as its almost a month since it last happened, which could mean something... like its a process only run once a month.

@johnbl might be able to see more in the dump info than I can.

first just remove this driver:
\SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\AppleCharger.sys Sun Oct 27 18:59:21 2013
download and run autoruns from microsoft and remove this driver.
I would not trust any data transfers over USB with this driver installed.
---------------

first bugcheck was a single bit corruption in virtual memory.
these are hard to find.
Normally you would first suspect the storage driver or drive firmware
secnvme.sys Mon Jan 20 21:55:38 2020
Samsung NVM Express Storport Miniport Driver

----------------
check your motherboard manual and confirm the memory is in the recommended slots. (all the slots were reporting as bank 0)
F4-3600C18-16GVK, confirm memory timings and voltages are correct
also check the command rate is set to spec and the profile is set in bios and memtest86 works as expected.
----------------
second bugcheck was most likely also a single bit was wrong;
00000000 00000000 00000000 00001000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000

I would confirm the recommended memory slots are populated for 2 modules (generally the pair closest to cpu)
make sure the timings and voltages are correct and I would just set the command rate to 2 and run memtest86 and confirm the memory settings are ok. it you have already done this then you have to find a bug in the storage controller, the storage firmware or the sleep functions.
I would update the intel drivers on your system before I started looking for the problem. https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/intel-driver-support-assistant.html

you have other suspect drivers but it is hard to generate this error with them. Single bit errors are hard to find. they can be dependent on the Temperature these temperature related defects can be exposed with the system sleep functions. IE you might be able to avoid them by a full shutdown of the system and restart of the system or not letting your system sleep. (note it does not have to be a bug in the sleep system for this to happen only after sleep cycles)
anyway, check things out and see what you find. Problems like this can take weeks to find. best hope is memtest finds the problem quickly and you only have to set some timings.

your cpu is pretty new:
Identifier = REG_SZ Intel64 Family 6 Model 151 Stepping 2
ProcessorNameString = REG_SZ 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-12900K

released 4th qtr 2021
Looks like you have the microsoft windows generic drivers, the intel download site might have fixes for the chipset that have not been released to microsoft yet.

cpu is also running at a funny clock rate:
~MHz = REG_DWORD 3187
it could mean bad setting in bios.

Thank you for the write-up. I'll check if I can get rid of the driver when I wake up in a couple of hours and also try my best to do the things you asked me to do.
The last time i ran Memtest the results came back with 0 errors and the SSD also didn't seem to be faulty. Maybe it's the graphics card?

I did not build this PC myself, I let a PC workshop near me buy the parts and put it together for me since i'm a complete beginner when it comes to hardware.
Regarding the RAM timings and voltage i will have to try and figure that one out.

Is it that unusual that the CPU is running at 3187 MHz? If it's supposed to run at 3200 that should be an easy fix, even for me.
All of the drivers should be up to date. The only driver that i've left out is a Intel Graphics Driver for the internal GPU i believe.

Would you like me to generate more dumpfiles/problems for you to analyze? Maybe i could offer you the Eventviewer information if that could help you.
As i said before i have no idea of that stuff and i'm considering to give my PC to the workshop clerk and hope that he can help me out with this so called PC that i have...

Edit: I remember that the last time i activated the XMP profile for the PC it used to crash more often. I think i haven't tried running the PC with the XMP profile in a long time. Might be worth a shot lol

maybe run a cpu test like prime95
I took a quick look at the bug list for your new cpu and the chipset.
I did see some sleep issues that will have to be fixed with bios updates. Also some USB issues that will be fixed in windows 11 and intel driver updates.
(mostly a bug that will hang audio streaming via usb)
there are bugs that will prevent the cpu from waking under some conditions but I did not see anything that would cause this corruption.
I would reset the bios to default, maybe turn off features in bios that I was not using and test the cpu. but do remove that old usb apple charger first.
the errors it cause would only show up with a look at a kernel memory dump in the internal logs.

the strange clock rate often indicates some voltage in the bios is wrong or the bios is attempting some dynamic overclocking. Assuming that you do not have any overclocking software running.

making your system sleep faster might cause the bugcheck to happen at a faster rate. (just a guess)

intel processor diagnostic tool will fail CPU at the BrandString line
This does not mean that your processor is defective. In order to complete the test on the IPDT go Tools > Stop Testing On Fail > Off.
https://community.intel.com/t5/Processors/brand-string-fail-test/td-p/560045
as it doesn't know what the 12000 series is yet.
I have seen it do it twice in recent weeks -but it will also fail the requred Frequency test as it doesn't know what CPU is, so hard to know what is required

That Apple charger software is from Gigabyte, it came with his board.

Running Prime95 and Heaven each for about an hour didn't lead to any problems.
Running a game like WH3 + Browser + Another lightweight game lead to the browser tabs constantly crashing until i restarted the PC.

The RAM sticks are in the correct slots and the Intel Drivers are up to date except for the Intel Graphics Driver, that one i cannot install. Probably because i have a Gigabyte Driver that is supposed to do the same that the Intel one does.

potential things to try:
start from a clean reboot
Disable your virtual memory (pagefile.sys) and run your programs that fail. windows will use a part of the ram for a internal pagefile in this case.
I. this might help to determine if the problem is in the storage path.
(chipset, storage driver, storage firmware)

another test:
I would fix the frequency of the CPU, disable any boot or step functions in bios
and retest with something that fails. you can re enable the virtual memory.

after that I would set the system to performance mode so it does not sleep reboot and see if you can reproduce the problem.

does the intel processor diagnostics run on this cpu?
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/15951/intel-processor-diagnostic-tool.html

it looks like it has not been updated but give it a try if you have not run it yet

most likely the cpu is ok, I am thinking the problem is going to be in the storage path because of what was failing. turning off the paging to disk might help determine the cause. paging to ram would not use the same drivers.
here are the intel beta drivers for your cpu, you might look over the list. (I would not use the motherboard gpu driver)

Tested with pagefile disabled ->
WH3 just crashed when loading into a battle (Tried it 3 times to be sure). While restarting i had a BSOD? Didn't really notice it tbh, could be because i wasn't paying attention.
Tested with fixed size of the pagefile (Startsize 4963MB - Max was 9000MB) ->
I could load into battle but it resulted in a BSOD after a couple minutes.

I was in the BIOS and tried to see how i could fix the frequency of the CPU... I have no idea which settings to tweak, there's literally hundreds of things to change.

Intel diagnostics tool does not run, because the CPU fails at the Brand check.

So i'm only getting BSOD when playing demanding games so far.
