Hello everyone,

Today I purchased an Acer S242HL 24'' monitor. I set it up using a DVI connection, and everything seemed fine until I tried playing some games. The screen will always flicker/tear (don't know what to call it) and the sides of the screen will basically end up flipped. I have tried enabling and disabling vsync, using HDMI, and different cords. After switching to HDMI, the problem was solved for a few hours but returned worse than ever. There are now even some websites I cannot visit, such as the YouTube homepage. I have even gotten this lovely black and yellow stripe screen that does not let me do anything.
This has been very frustrating and any help would be appreciated.
The problem has only begun today with my new monitor, I had been using a 720p TV via HDMI before and it worked fine.
I am using a Radeon HD 6870 card at 1920x1080 resolution if that helps.

Here are some pictures to better explain:

Thanks in advance,
Leonard

Solution
This could be two things. One, the video card is stressed more running on the higher resolution and is revealing flaws/damage to it, or is overheating. Two, the monitor is bad. If you can, find another monitor with that resolution to test (borrow a friends or something), and run some game benchmarks like 3DMark. That will stress the card enough so that if there are any issues with it, you'll see the same problems with the second monitor. Also you can maybe try running the monitor you have with the same resolution as the TV, see what happens. An outside chance that the connections you are using are bad, if all else is not conclusive you can try to swap the TV connection to the monitor and test that.

Solution

Thanks for the reply, here's what I did:

I am personally doubtful that there is a problem with the video card for a few reasons. First, it is barely a month old. I also tried gaming at 720p resolution (Which is what my tv was at) and the problem still occurred. I have moved the computer to a different location in my house since I purchased the monitor but the GPU temps seem to be consistent with what they were.
I ran 3DMark on my current monitor and the problem still occurred.
I tried using the HDMI cable I used with the TV and the problem STILL occurred.
I guess the only thing left is that the monitors dead. Lovely.
If anyone has any other suggestions, please leave a reply

Leonard

EDIT: I was wrong, maybe my card was overheating. I upped the fan speed from 35% to 50% and I haven't seen any problems since. Thanks @hang-the-9.
