I just bought an Advent 7012 laptop in the UK, with the 2.6GHz P4. The cooling fan annoyingly stays on all the time. As I've only owned 2 other laptops (with a 1.0GHz Celeron and a 1.4GHz P4), I dont know if this is normal. Is it? Does anyone know how I can change this so it only kicks on during high process times (like my 2 other computers), and if this is advisable. Someone else also told me that this may be a desktop designed chip stuffed into a laptop. And one final Q, do most modern (less than 6 months old) typially have their fans constantly running? Sorry for all the questions but Im not too familiar with laptop performace.

Any info will be much appreciated!

my friend has a Dell P4M 1.6 and his fan is at least on low all the time
is your 2.6 P4 a mobile P4 or a regular (i've heard some companies actually put desktop processors into laptops for max performance)
obviously putting a desktop processor, especially one that powerful, into a laptop is going to require a lot of airflow over the heatsink
and if it's a P4M i'd still say it's probably normal that your fan is always on

my girlfriend has a laptop with a 2ghz desktop P4 in it. The fan does not run all the time, but it usualy kicks in whenever it is doing anything but idling.

Have you tried messing with the power saving settings?

The laptop could well be set to "full power all the time" thus running hot. "try some other settings to see if it runs cooler or quieter.
