Hi,

I'm having a very frustrating situation.
Despite many repairs, my SSD keeps getting error messages after a couple of days.
  • Since January, this is the second replacement drive.
  • As Admin I've run the repair commands on CMD Prompt and Powershell.
  • I formatted the drive several times.
  • In the SSD I have music libraries (for music production) that have been downloaded by the company's dedicated downloader (I run that under Admin as well).
  • I purchased a powered USB cable for my Wi-Fi adapter and 2x 60W powered USB hubs.
  • We're suspecting it can be a Windows Issue
  • Windows support suggested I first repair as admin through Powershell and I have 3 times.
I'm posting here in hopes of seeing if I can get a different perspective and maybe resolve the issue.

Tech Support and I have been trying to resolve this issue since January. I also contacted Microsoft to see if this is a Windows issue but they haven't responded to my email since 2 weeks ago.

Is anyone familiar with this type of matter?
I can use all the help I can get!

All the best,

What does that have to do with SSD problems?
Why are you using USB wi-fi adapter?
Can't you use internally installed wifi-adapter? or internal ethernet adapter instead?

I repaired the error today so I don't have any screenshots available right now.
Referencing the past error messages, I would get the following, hope this helps.

The type of the file system is NTFS.
Access is denied.

The volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk
might report errors when no corruption is present.
Volume label is SA Drive 1.

WARNING! /F parameter not specified.
Running CHKDSK in read-only mode.

Stage 2: Examining file name linkage ...
40 reparse records processed.
Error detected in index $I30 for file 2614.
Error detected in index $I30 for file 2614.
Error detected in index $I30 for file 7AFC.
Error detected in index $I30 for file 7AFC.
168702 index entries processed.
Index verification completed.
Phase duration (Index verification): 2.29 seconds.

There's another bunch I would also get. The entire list is too long to post so here's the gist. It's these with different file names:
Stage 1: Examining basic file system structure ...
Attribute list for file 60E3 is corrupt.
Attribute list for file 61F8 is corrupt.
Attribute list for file C4C6 is corrupt.

Followed by a bunch more file names, and then...
File verification completed.
Phase duration (File record verification): 3.18 seconds.
File record segment 60E8 is an orphan.
File record segment 60EA is an orphan.
File record segment 60F1 is an orphan.

Followed by a bunch more segment names.
List commands you used.
The drive with the error is my F drive, named 'SA Drive 1'.
I was advised to use "CHKDSK /R F:" in Powershell under Admin.
What does that have to do with SSD problems?
Why are you using USB wi-fi adapter?
Can't you use internally installed wifi-adapter? or internal ethernet adapter instead?
Thank you for mentioning this. I missed an explanation.
The drive is an external drive with no power (EX: this looks identical to the one I have.)

I'm using a Wi-Fi adapter (This) because it's impossible to get a direct wired connection to my system and, my internal Wi-Fi can't get a stable connection from the area in my room. As an alternative, I use a Wi-Fi adapter with a 30' powered USB cable.

While downloading 25GB-260GB files through the downloader, I would sometimes get kicked offline because my Wi-Fi adapter would cut off. I still don't know why it does that, all my USB ports become unusable (ie: mouse, kb, audio interface...). I force restart if that happens.
I began to guess that the errors were caused by the abrupt dropouts and shutdowns so, I assumed insufficient power might be a cause and began to suspect I had too much stuff attached to the laptop.
I tried with all of the drives disconnected and with the drive directly connected to the computer but it would still drop out after a while. To be extra sure, I purchased a powered USB cable for the Wi-Fi adapter. No more abrupt USB dropouts but I still get the error messages.

I have 1 original SSD and another replacement drive.
The first drive is a Samsung SSD 860 EVO 4TB and the replacement drive is a Crucial MX500 4TB 3D. I'm currently using the Crucial so I'll be downloading their Crucial Storage Executive as soon as I get the chance.

I hope this helps. I've been on and off with tech support since January so, I may breeze through something with a lack of explanation.

Are you able to connect your external drive to a USB 2.0 port? USB 3.0? This will limit the transfer rate for testing purposes. It may be that data is being dropped at the higher speeds.

I realise your drives are SATA models, but here is a long thread where people are experiencing stability issues with NVMe drives over USB:

https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/stable-nvme-usb-adapter.2572973/

Perhaps your setup becomes unstable at the higher transfer rates?

If you want to find out which files are being called out by CHKDSK, download DMDE (disc editor).

https://dmde.com/

Launch DMDE.
Select your physical drive.
D-click the NTFS volume under the Partitions tab.
Select Editor -> File Record -> hex and enter the file number eg 7AFC

In the bottom right pane you should now see that particular file's MFT record. You can click the up-arrow to maximise the tab.

You have to run the command from Elevated command prompt.
You have to include /F switch in chkdisk command to repair file system errors.

I'd suggest, you use powered USB connection for external drive too.
Improper USB drive disconnect will cause file system errors.

Understood. I swapped the Crucial with the Samsung since I already did a version of repair on the Curcial.
I also downloaded Crucial and Samsung diagnostics tools and learned something interesting but, i have no idea what it means.

The Curcial drives needed a FW update so I went ahead and updated them.
As for the Samsung drives, Magician (Samsungs tool) doesn't allow diagnostics for external drives. I went ahead and started swapping each of them with my secondary internal drive to update the FW one by one.
The drive with the issue (F:) is not recognized at all when its installed directly to the laptop. It doesn't appear in My Computer or Disk Management but, when I plug it back into the external enclosure, it comes back up. With my limited knowledge, i have no idea why it does this.

I don't know if this helps. I ran your suggested repair first, then used downloaded Magician.

I'd suggest, you use powered USB connection for external drive too.
Improper USB drive disconnect will cause file system errors.
Gotcha. I'm going to start looking into some powered external drives.

Can you show a screenshot from Disk Management, with problematic drive connected?
(upload to imgur.com and post link)
Since my reply, I have an update...

Windows prompted me with the familiar disk error message a few hours after leaving my response. Before addressing it, I decided to swap the drives first for the screenshot.

I reinserted the problematic SSD and, upon bootup, an error repairing message came up on the splash screen! I waited a few minutes for it to complete. Once I was in Windows, the drive now comes up on 'My Computer'...

I opened Magician and it recognized my drive. I moved on to install the FW update but it stated it was already up to date. I went ahead and moved on with a full Diagnostic Scan. ETC is 10 hours as I'm typing this. Magician states that "This scan detects and corrects read errors on each LBA" so I hope this will remedy the constant errors...

I'll keep you posted after the scan :)

Hi,

Since the full Magician scan some things to note.

I still have the SSD connected internally.
The Magician scan was completed with no errors.

The following day, I had to work on a project so I took what was originally my internal drive into the external enclosure. I think about several hours after plugging in the drive, I received my familiar "Scan for drive errors" message in Windows. The message is labeled under "Security and Maintenance".
I clicked on it but it went away for a brief second and came back up. I didn't get any windows or alerts popping up. So clicked on it some more but it's the same thing.

I thought, that if inserting the external drive caused the Windows error message to pop up, then it was best to address the purchase of a powered external enclosure now. so, I purchased 3x of these dual bay enclosures - they should arrive tomorrow. 1 for JBOD and the rest for future RAID expansion.

Will update again after installing the new enclosures :)
