Question Constant WIFI issues!!

Hey people,

really get fed up with this now.

Story is, my PC will not allow a stable connection through WIFI.

I have tried multiple devices, including USB WIFI dongle, and now a fully installed Intel WIFI card.

They both worked brilliantly for a few weeks and then out of nowhere the connection is lost.

When I run the troubleshoot it tells me its the router, when this is not true because all other devices connect fine, such as tablet, phones and laptops.

I have trawled and trawled the internet for resolutions but unable to trace anything!!

This really is starting to hack me off big time.

Speccy;

WIFI snapshot from speccy;

Wi-Fi Info

Available access points count 1
Wi-Fi (TALKTALK103120)
SSID TALKTALK103120
Frequency 5180000 kHz
Channel Number 36
Name TALKTALK103120
Signal Strength/Quality 99
Security Enabled
State The interface is connected to a network
Dot11 Type Infrastructure BSS network
Network Connectible
Network Flags Currently Connected to this network
Cipher Algorithm to be used when joining this network AES-CCMP algorithm
Default Auth used to join this network for the first time 802.11i RSNA algorithm that uses PSK

Any help or info would be hugely appreciated

Thanks

Make and model router?

The router's logs, if available and enabled, may provide some clue.

Who has full admin rights to the router? You will need help from that person.

Ensure that only one network adapter is enabled on your PC. Either wired or wireless and only one adapter enabled.

Download the applicable network adapter drivers from the manufacturer's website. Reinstall and reconfigure.

Are you able to run "ipconfig /all" (without quotes) via the Command Prompt? If so, do so and post the results.

Hello Ralson, many thanks for your reply.

Ill answer one question at a time:

Router Logs - how would i get these?

Admin rights - I know I have the admin details for my router as i was previously able access the router via IP address in the search - this has subsequently stopped working as well i.e. he IP address of the router no longer allows me access to it

Network Adaptors - I only have one at the moment - my intel WIFI card

All drivers have been updated, this is a matter of course and one of the first troubleshooting items

A couple of things:

"ipconfig /all" indicates that wired connectivity is being used.

Your computer is getting its' DHCP IP address (192.168.42.90) from a router with IP 192.168.42.129.

What make and model router?

That IP (192.168.42.129) is, to me anyway, quite unusual. For most home routers the IP is more commonly 192.168.1.1 with a few close variations. E.g., 192.168.0.1.

192.168.42.129 is the IP address you need to access the router. You also need the applicable Username and password to administratively access the router.

Another observation is the lease time. Currently the router is providing that lease time for only 90 minutes. Technically while your computer is connected the lease should be being automatically renewed.

There could be some breakdown in the process.

I would start by administratively accessing the router and changing the lease time to 24 hours (1,440 minutes).

Something else: Your speccy results list show wireless at the run time.

Do you have a modem/router or another router thereabouts?

Hello Ralston, thanks for your reply.

  • no wired connection in place
  • router is a TalkTalk router - only make or model I could see was Sagemcom ?
  • I have found the router IP address on the back of the router, but this is different from the default gateway IP which is what i was led to believe is the router IP
  • The wifi connects no problem, it just doesn't want to transmit internet over it, and this is now the 2nd device with the same problem (1st was a wifi dongal)

I have also been through every setting on the router and I cannot amend anything to do with lease time. So not sure if this something you can change on all routers?

Are you connected over some VPN service? Unless you were messing a lot with your network setup nothing in the ipconfig information is correct for what you should see, it's not showing your wireless adapter as connected to anything, and the Ethernet IP is not matching your home setup. How exactly is this system connected
