I'd like to construct a raid 6 with eight drives using a PCI-E SAS controller, but I'm curious about the portability of the resultant array. If I buy new system hardware (motherboard, CPU, etc.) every 2 years or so, does the array remain intact and is it easily added to a new system, keeping my partitions and data?
I am trying to move away from chipset-based raid solutions since I'm stuck in a cycle of:
1.) Buy new motherboard, make array.
2.) Time passes, array fills.
3.) Upgrade hardware, forced to buy disk same size as array to transfer data.
4.) Remake array on new motherboard, put data back.
5.) Repeat.
