replacing modem router with wireless router. m/r is impeding internet speed. is it possible to connect the router to the m/r to specifically retain the landline connection?

I should have stated m/r is BYO, TP Link Archer VR600v AC1600 wireless Gigabit Voip ADSL/VDSL Modem Router.

You have to use the modem router as the router, and configure your new wireless router in AP mode or they will conflict (see the wireless router's documentation for how to do this). Once it is running to your satisfaction, simply disable the radios in the modem router if you don't want to use them.

This of course assumes the problem with the modem router is its wifi, since wired ethernet speed would be exactly the same as before

Is the landline provided by the ISP ? If so, you typically can't continue to have landline without the ISP router. You may be able to double NAT that router, disable WIFI and use is as nothing but a landline server. That is what I would try first.
