My issues started initially on October 20th 2019. I had been playing a game for about 2 hours and experienced a crash to the desktop. Other than the crash my pc appeared to be working as expected, browsing web, chatting on discord etc. I had left and returned a short time later and found the pc frozen on the desktop, the mouse and keyboard were unresponsive. I held the power button for several seconds to force shutdown and my pc would not boot after. It was getting power (lights and fans spin up) but would not post. Onboard diagnostics on motherboard indicated issue with CPU, GPU, and RAM and was quickly and continuously rolling through multiple debug codes (faster than I could really even register).
My motherboard supports dual BIOS, so I had tried booting to the backup BIOS with no change. I'd removed all 4 RAM modules and tested each independently in slot 1, tried booting with and without drives attached and without GPU attached. I had disconnected and reconnected all cables and components to ensure everything was still properly connected/seated. I reset CMOS with dedicated button with no change so disconnected from power and removed CMOS battery for several hours with no effect.
I did not (and still do not) have other components to test the system with, so had taken it in to the repair shop and was determined to be a bad CPU.
I received a replacement CPU 11/18/19, installed it after work and it booted up straight away. That night I updated some apps (Steam, Epic Launcher, Origin Launcher, Discord), did some casual browsing and played a game for about an hour, hour and a half with no issues.
Last night I turned it on, did some casual browsing and played a game for about 30-40 minutes before my pc had frozen, again having to force shutdown. This time it did bring up splash screen/BIOS but screen went black and did not boot to windows. No LEDs were showing indicating a fault with CPU, GPU, or RAM but was showing debug code 26 (I’ve found nothing in the manual or online for this code). I rebooted again and it did boot to windows. I used it for a few more hours last night and about an hour this morning before work without issues but have not tried playing any games since the freeze last night.
Thermals using NZXT CAM software have CPU idling between mid 30s to low 40s C getting up to mid 50s to low 60s while gaming. GPU idling in low to mid 40s and up in the mid 70s while gaming.
Of note in case of relevance, I seem to generate a lot of static at my apartment – cooler dry air in the Midwest… I make a concerted effort to touch the side of my case before pressing the power button or plugging in any usb peripherals and get zapped most times I touch my case.
Any thoughts on what may be at fault? Having booted directly to windows after installing the replacement CPU, it’s clear that the original CPU had stopped functioning but I worry it may have had help in its demise and another component may be faulty and had damaged it. I’d hate to have my currently working CPU get hosed due to an issue with another component.
Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
