I want to keep using my vizio tv remote, but want to be able to chnage the digital cable box channel with the vizio remote, like if you connected cable with a coaxial cable. the box has an ir input, is there programmable adapters that will take the tv channel commands and send them to the digital cable box?

No, that would require the Vizio TV to take the commands and send them to the cable box, otherwise the Vizio would still respond to the commands.

IF you want a fancy remote to control everything, http://www.logitech.com/en-us/harmony-remotes

Something along those lines. Not cheap though. lol. The hub based ones are nice though. I have one and can press a button to say "watch movie" and my HTPC turns on, tv turns on, AVR switches input, LED lights change color, AVR sets surround mode, IR controlled LED candles turn on and set to flicker mode for ambient light.

Most remote controls are programmable for multiple devices. Your Vizio probably is.

Depends, a lot of remotes are going RF nowadays. My roomies Vizio has a keyboard on the bottom and fancy crap, but it's RF only. Luckily, the TV still has a IR receiver on it so it works with the Harmony products, but the actual remote is only RF, and thus no universal function. More and more smart TV's are going RF remote.

Absolutely nothing.

I guess an option that would work for me would be getting the vizio universal remote

What is the specific cable box you have?
