I haven't done a build in a decade so perhaps this is a dumb question, but the MOBO I'm looking to purchase does not have a conventional PCI expansion slot (MSI Z87-G45 Gaming LGA 1150).

Is there any reason (existing hardware) that one would need a conventional PCI slot? I'm trying to avoid any surprises down the line, though my assumption is such a slot is not needed for new and future hardware.

There is nothing to worry about. Unless there is something really specific you need to use a PCI for you'll be fine. I just bought that motherboard for the PC I just built and its great. Just made sure the WiFi card I got was PCIe and all is good. Good luck with your build :)
