I have an unused optical bay in my new laptop and would like to convert it into something useful. I have seen adapters that allow you to install hard drives in an optical drive bay, but nothing for a USB. Is there a way to turn this bay with a Slimline 13 pin SATA connector into a something that will allow me to have more USN ports? SATA to USB male connectors exist, so I don't know why I can't find a SATA to usb female adapter. I'm even okay jury rigging something.

Solution
I don't believe this is possible - USB is a general purpose bus, but SATA is very storage-specific.

If it was a Lenovo with an Ultrabay (which has PCIe lanes, I believe), it might be possible.

Does the laptop have an ExpressCard slot?

Not sure about the slot. It's a really cheap Acer E5 521. I haven't opened it since I changed the HDD to an SSD since you have to take off the keyboard just to do that. All I can see for the time being is a Slimline 13 pin SATA connector.
