Convert Slides to Digital Files

I borrowed an old 21c slide converter to convert about 400 slides
to digital format. After trying a few slides, those not taken in the sunlight
are very dark when converted, although they are not that dark when viewed
with the slide projector. Question: do new slide converters produce more
light to get a good image? Can the light level be adjusted?
I am concerned about buying a new slide converter and finding that it
produces the same results as the old converter.

Brightening the images is more likely to be a function of follow-up editing on the captured digital image.

The hardware is likely to be very limited in having any supportive role beyond getting the image into a digital format.
