Convert WORD 32bit to 64 bit

How can I convert XP 32bit Word .doc files to Windows 7 64bit Word files, both using Office 2010?

32- or 64-bit shouldn't matter as far as Word. You should be able to open the files without any conversion.

are you sure there is such a thing

Word doc or docx should be readable for XP (2002), 2003, 2007, 2010 & 2013

MS provides updates to older versions to read & write docX (which arrived with Word 2007)
Similarly with Excel xls & xlsX

What problems are you having ?

I thought there would be no problem either but for some reason when I open the doc files in Windows 7 64 bit environment the files are garbage.

In Windows 7 untill you install MS Office or Word (or the free Word viewer) doc files will be opened by Wordpad
Wordpad reads RTF files whether extension is .RTF or .DOC but can not read .docX or Word created .doc files
