Hi, today I was supposed to upgrade stock case fan to a 3 pin Noctua NF-A9.

Unfortunately, I discovered too late that a 3 pin cannot plug into the motherboard..

motherboard socket is this.. sorry, could not pull out the connector of the stock fan to show more details.. there seems to be a way of pulling this out as the techinician at the shop was able to pull it easily, but now at home.. I can't. Afraid of breaking something, so won't force it.

anyway, is there a converter I could buy.. so that a 3 pin case fan could plug into this? Info appreciated.

What is the make/model of your motherboard?
Usually, a 4 pinsocket is perfectly happy with a 3 pin fan plugged in.
It may run at full speed, or, it may be speed adjustable, depending on the motherboard.
Lower speed can be has with the noctua low speed adapter that is usually included with the fan.

You will eventually need to remove the connector.
There seems to be a latch securing it in place.
That needs to be opened up while you pull out the connector.

@geofelt

board is a Dell Optiplex 7010. There are speed adapters that came with the box. Anyway, I plan to run the Noctua case fan at full speed to get as much ventilation as possible in the case.

John already instructed me how to remove the connector. But thanks anyway for the advice.
