Hi guys! I've got a case, on which I'd like to upgrade the front USB connectors. They're USB 2.0, but I wanna convert them to USB 3.0. This seems like it should be a simple process, since the connection of front panel to mother board is nothing more than a set of contacts and pins joined by bunch of wires. So long as the correct contacts are linked to the correct pins on the motherboard, everything should be sweet.
However, USB 3.0 has more wires, so here's where I'm unsure. I don't have a USB connector in front of me, but I suspect USB 3.0's extra pins will prevent a new connector from simply being soldered into place and re-wired. But maybe the legs on the connector's shield can still be used? In that case, it would just be a matter of soldering each wire, one by one directly to the motherboard connector plug. But at least the connector will still be held firmly to the board.
The other method could involve using a USB 3.0 female extension cord with a motherboard connector at the other end. That would probably work, but will be difficult to secure to the board.
Any suggestions guys?
