Heya folks. New build on the horizon. Ground up and all that.

So I am going with ssd for my installation drive. Getting it big enough to run my OS and a good chunk of my steam library that I like to have installed for rainy days.

I'm also going with a second smaller ssd for use for a dedicated ubuntu drive, but that's neither here nor there.

Right now on my partpicker list I am going with the Caviar Green 3TB <$100 for my main storage for all things not program related.

Been getting grief from some folks saying I am wasting time and money not buying a smaller black model and getting a third of the storage.

In life I am no where near a pack rat.

On the box, I hate shifting things around to "make room". My currently beleaguered rig has a small 750G HDD which has served me well but over 8 years it's been filled and then spring cleaned and filled again so many times I can't count. Dunno, I'm a digital hoarder I guess.

I refuse to spend more than $100 for extra storage, so convince me that going th black caviar route and getting 1/3 the storage is better. What angle am I missing?

I am going 5820k, 16gig DDR4, yada yada yada.

Thanks folks.

Not going to be my main system drive. Just storage for vids, pics, save games, and other useless tomfoolery. :)

Ok, but why? What's the real tangible benefit? I'm not trying to be snarky, I just don't understand the real difference if it's just functioning as storage for such files?

Thanks for the input :)

I am wif you brother. If green gives you more bytes for dollar and storage space is more important than performance (that's what you got those SSD for), then go for green.

I personally always buy tires that have less road noise even though they are not top performers and not as long lasting. Noise is a big deal to me, and I don't drive like a maniac to demand whatever "performance" they try to sell me.

Thanks mate!

I'm just going with the Green. It'll be more than fast enough to watch movies from, play music from, and store large pdf's. I don't need the noise or "performance".

And there really wasn't any counter arguments to getting a green.

The only thing I hear about the green is, they tend to spin down very quick, by default, sounds like adjustable, plus the Windows sleep setting *should* keep it spinning when not idle. If you have it hooked up a normal internal sata, it should be OK. May have spin down issues only if hooked up externally.

Perfect use for a Green Drive which are 5900 rpm's by the way. 🙂 Enjoy.

They just don't make good system drive because they have a inactivity timer which spins down the drive regardless of how you have windows set and it cannot be overridden. The spin back up causes a second or two of lag which isnt really noticeable on a storage drive and you would probably even have a black drive set to sleep after some inactivity period making the net result exactly the same. LoL

I have two 2Tb ezrx models in my home sever for almost 4 yrs now with no issues but the two previous 2tb ears models both failed after 2 years if that helps you. (The ears were know for having issues)

You might consider a Red drive if you want a longer warranty, the Green series is 1 yr; red is 3yrs for about $20 more.
