The average power consumption of the new chips is expected to be about 31 watts.
that means idle wattage will be lower :)

can you say "overclocking headroom"?

Remains to be seen. I'm not convinced even current A64's are thermally limited. Even if you apply liquid cooling, they just don't seem to overclock all that much. Rumours that the 2.6 GHz Athlon FX55 will be 130nm based and AMD will not go above ~2.6 until they implement a 11 layer design early next year reinforce my idea that it will take until spring next year until we get some really good overclockers from AMD.

Can you say "Tbred-A" ?

At least, this give a clue about performance improvement and power consumption.

That process allows it to do the same work with less loss from resistance which normally confirms to heat. Less heat is good. Also less juice. Man I can wait to toast one of those chips

It's even better than that if you read <A HREF="http://www.theregister.com/2004/08/20/amd_90nm_strained/" target="_new">http://www.theregister.com/2004/08/20/amd_90nm_strained/</A>

If they're available in a desktop pin grid that will be truely amazing. Building a super-high-performance Home Theater PC with a fan that spins so low you can't hear it will be easy, buiding a nearly silent desktop with inexpensive coolers will be easy, keeping your room cool will be easy, etc.
