Hello. I am building my first PC and I wondered what side the fan should be on. I've seen people put this CPU cooler with the fan on the side of the RAM and I've seen people put it on the side by the back of the case fan. What way is correct and why?

FACING BACK CASE FAN SIDE:

Parts:

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
AMD FX-8350
Gigabyte 970A-UD3P
Apevia X-Hermes-BL

Thank you!

Solution
you mount the cooler itself with the words "cooler master" being able to be read if looked at from the rear of the case. There is also a small pin in the base of the cooler that needs to be at the top so it fits in a notch of the mounting bracket. This pin aligns the cooler and stops it from slowly slipping down and off of part of the CPU over time.

Now that we have cleared up how the cooler itself needs to be mounted lets talk about your question.

you always mount the fan on the "front", ram side, of the cooler with the air flow blowing in to the fins towards the rear of the case. The reasons for this are simple and are as follows. 1. in this orientation the fan will draw in fresh cool air from the front of the case. 2. the rear...

you always mount the fan on the "front", ram side, of the cooler with the air flow blowing in to the fins towards the rear of the case. The reasons for this are simple and are as follows. 1. in this orientation the fan will draw in fresh cool air from the front of the case. 2. the rear exhaust fan can then pull most of the hot air that is coming out of the cooler out of the case. 3. Normal air flow patterns for cases are from the the bottom front of the case to top rear of the case. this feeds the GPU fresh air and also feeds the CPU fresh air.

If you have seen others mounting the fan on the 212's Just in the rear they are not doing it properly.

In the following pic you will see a Hyper 212 EVO mounted in a push/pull configuration. Where the blue lit fan is located is where you will mount a single fan. You can also see teh proper Cooler orientation with the words Cooler Master being able to be read from the rear of the case. I have seen people mount this cooler upside down. This is a pic of my old PC before I rebuilt it.

EDIT: In fact this following pic link has the cooler mounted upside down. This is the wrong way to mount the Hyper 212 series coolers. http://cdn.overclock.net/6/65/900x900px-LL-655fe2f8_IMG_0272.jpeg

Either side it's mounted the air is blowing out towards the back of the case.
Proper would be on the memory side blowing air through toward the back this gives you the best cooling.
When the fan is mounted on the cooler on the other side this is usally because of clearance issues with the memory heatsinks like on the Corsair Vengeance. Then the fan is mounted to the other side sucking air through the cooler still blowing it to the back of the case.
