Coolermaster 460w P/S enough?

I am assembling a new PC, and here is list of my parts;
AMD Phenom 9850 x4
4GB ddr800 ram (2 sticks)
2 SATA hardrives (one 320gb, another 120gb)
1 DVD rom, 1 DVD-RW
and, 1 ATI HD4830 video card.
I have seen somebody run an Intel E8400 system with a nvidia 9800gt with a 350w power supply, but I am not sure if the coolermaster 460w is exactly adequate for my needs

Oh its more than adequate...the psu can run a 4870 easy...

It will run the 1 card, but if you plan to add a second card in the future, you will need to upgrade the psu.

I would advise you to not get that PSU. 70% efficiency is not good, you want something that is 80+ certified. Coolermaster PSU's do not have a good rep, they fail quite commonly, the only CM PSU's that are good are the Real Power Pro series. The price of that PSU should tell you something. Well, I asked everyone if the power supply is enough to run all of these parts, but all of you guys seem to talk only about the video card. How about the CPU? It is rated at 125W consumption rite? and what about the 2 hardrives, and the 2 optical drives? I am sure that the video card isn't the only thing that would consume a significant amount of power right?

Btw, my other power supply is an HEC ORION HP485D

Can you guys revise your thoughts plz?

I think I'd stay away from that HEC psu. The coolermaster is better quality, though it's not spectacular either. The talk is all about the video card because that's what consumes most of the power. I lost the link to my psu calculator; But there are calculators out there that can tell you how much wattage you'll need. With the card and cpu you have, I would put it around 275W (ruff estimate). The rest of the components use minimal power.

How old is your PSU? They "age" over time and can loose the ability to provide full rated power. Do have the model number?
E8400 & 9800gt with a 350w power supply is certainly possible if it's a decent PSU - which not all are.
Your 460W PSU has less power in the +12V supply than some 350/380W PSUs. And it's the +12V that provides power for the majority of the system, CPU and video card using the most. For example:

If you look at the +12V power on offer its 312W for the CM 460 and 324W for the Antec 380.
Another note on the CM 460 says it's combined power output of all the power rails shall not exceed 401W.
So your CM 460 PSU isn't really a 460W PSU. CM 460 review

Even with an average/below average PSU like the CM 460 it should power your system adequately. As someone already pointed out your PC won't need more than 300watts.
Couldn't find enough info on the HEC ORION HP485D to form an opinion but I wouldnt be surprised to find the CM 460 is actually a better PSU which is kind of scary.

Both PSU's are ticking time bombs just waiting to take out other hardware when (not if) they fail.

and I believe some of you guys are grossly over exaggerating the integrity
of the Coolermaster 460w;; I mean;; has any1 here even used/ tested it b4?
My friend bought the power supply for me because he's checked some of the
reviews (i.e. hardware secrets) and I'd really hate to break my budget or return
the part.

Just get the Antec Earthwatts 430w, its very good quality and relatively cheap. Do not skimp on the PSU, it is one of the most important parts of your PC.

The CoolerMaster PSU will power your system. I personally wouldn't do it, but it can run your Phenom CPU, 2 HD's, 2 optical drives, 4GB of RAM, and 4830. The power requirements for the 4830 aren't that high.

Your friend didn't finish doing his homework when researching PSU's. Yes there is a bit of exaggeration here, it is possible that you will not have problems with that PSU, however most of us here at TH do not believe it is worth the risk of going with a product that is questionable and can jeopardize your entire system, when you could get a much better PSU for $20 more.

The newer Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus models aren't nearly as bad as the old Cooler Master eXtreme Power models that had a deservedly bad reputation.
For the OP's build he should get about 80% efficiency under load and adequate ripple and noise levels.
It's not in the same class of efficiency, load regulation and overall build quality as other options though.
You get what you pay for and if it were my money I'd maybe cut a corner somewhere else. And it's not a PSU I'd feel good about recommending. At least the OP isn't walking into something without being aware of better options.

The review on hardwaresecrets faulted the Coolermaster 460 on being overrated, but still recommended it for lower-power systems. While I wouldn't buy one myself (I don't like supporting liars), I could resist the urge to howl if someone else did.
That said, I've never read a bad competent technical review of an Antec PSU. An Earthwatts 380 would be an excellent choice for you.

OCZ PSU's are ok, better than the coolermaster ones but still not at the level of antec, corsair, PC P&C, or seasonic. OCZ is kind of the middle ground, but I wouldn't feel bad about recommending it for someone on a budget.

haha yeah;;; thx guys! I just ordered the corsair! No heavy gaming or crossfire for me, I just want this compu to last (perhaps even as long as the Pentium 3 500mhz my friend is placing with this system)
