Here's another way to tell. This applies to all FANS, but not to the fan headers on the mobo. On a FAN, if there are FOUR wires from the motor and they end in a fan connector with FOUR holes, then it is a PWM fan. I've never seen any fan with a four-wire-and-hole system that was NOT PWM. Conversely, if the fan has three wires and a three-hole connector, it cannot possibly be of the PWM type - it can only be an older 3-pin Voltage Control Mode unit. Further, any fan that has only TWO wires from its motor can only be controlled by the Voltage Control Mode, plus it cannot send its speed signal to anywhere.
