Cooling for AMD 8 core

hey guys, ive read a few threads about how much heat is generated when you are running an amd 8 core cpu when loaded and/or overclocked. Im planning on getting an amd 8320, overclocking it to the speed of an 8350 (at least), and i am looking for cooling solutions. it will be loaded on a daily basis with after effects and maya and gaming (occaisionally) on ultra settings. I'm looking at a corsair h60 (about $50 on amazon atm) which i would run in push-pull. is the corsair h60 going to cut it?! i want to stay around that price range but i dont want to kill my cpu. Also, if this does work, what fans should i get? im looking to not spend a huge amount on fans.

thanks to your guys' help, i chose a different case which should be better for airflow, and have opted to spend the extra money on the corsair h100i. Although it pushes me slightly over budget, it should be worth it, insuring the longetivity of my CPU (and my house for that matter lol).
 
Solution
When I had my 8350 usually at 4.8 with the vcore at 1.47 with the h100i in push pull it would run prime 95 at 50c on the core package forever. Hell my 4770k is at 4.5 right now barely hitting over 60c using my h100i.

if you don't have room in your case for that large radiator on the h100i, I wouldn't get a 120mm liquid cooler. They don't work any better than a decent air cooler. The Hyper EVO 212 will cool just as good if not better than a H60, and will be quieter and cheaper as well.

so are you saying the cooler master hyper 212 evo would work? if that works, then how about the noctua nh-d14? I originally wanted to air cool but i didnt know if they would fit in my thermaltake chaser a21 case.

I'm running an 8350 on an Asus Sabertooth 990FX board with an Antec Kuhler H2O 620, with Cougar fans in push-pull. I'm overclocked to 4.4 Ghz. I think its performance is similar to the h60, so it should be good for a moderate overclock.
 


this is absolutely not true i had a 212 evo and could only get a 4.5 oc on my 8350 got an h100i and got a 5ghz oc. this is from experience not reading it on the internet

The Hyper EVO would work fine in my opinion, that Noctua outperforms most closed loop coolers and is one of the best CPU coolers out there, but the issue is space lol, that thing is a monster

Dude, I said don't get a 120mm rad, the H100i is 240mm. Of course I would get a H100i over a EVO, I said if he didn't have enough room for a large radiator (which some cases don't) to forgo the liquid coolers all together and get the EVO because 120mm or small closed loop liquid coolers don't perform much if at all better than an EVO...

From experience as well my friend, don't jump to conclusions.

The Hyper 212 EVO is not enough cooler for an eight core cpu. Been There Done That. The 8320/8350 generate a crap load of heat. My room literally warms up when I game. The Hyper EVO 212 EVO is cheap for a reason. Its entry level. It will even struggle keeping an overclocked 6300 or 6350 cool. Do yourself a favor and buy a mid range cooler. Forget the H60. Why do people get a nice cpu and video card then cheap out on boards, psu's, cpu coolers. Never fails to amaze me.

how does the corsair h80i sound? im looking at https://pcpartpicker.com/parts/cpu-cooler/?compatible_with=thermaltake-case-ca1a300m1wn00 a list of cooling options compatable with my case

The H80i really doesn't cool any better than an EVO, that is why I said if you can't afford the better coolers, just go with the EVO. 120mm rads just can't get rid of enough heat. I've been building computers for years, the EVO will get you a decent overclock, and your temps will be fine. Unless you are going for 5Ghz, in which case any cooler less than the best won't do what you need them to do. With an EVO (at $30 I might add) cools just as good as coolers twice and sometimes three times as expensive.

Better but still it won't keep that processor cool especially if you want to do 4.2 or higher. BTW I have and H100 and it sucks. I would look at Noctua or Phanteks or Thermaltake coolers at NewEgg.
 
The EVO actually does quite well, take a look at the frosty tech reviews, with a 150W load the Hyper 212 Evo is 15.9C above ambient, the NH-D14 is at 14.5C which is better but not twice the price better. The H80i and H100i show up at 10.4C and 10.1C above ambient respectively. Take a look at frostytech for real numbers to see if the H80i is really worth 2x the price of the Hyper 212 +/Evo/X to you.

For scale, with a 150W CPU load and a 40C ambient temperature in the case you would see 55.9C, 54.5C, 50.4C, and 50.1C from the Hyper 212 Evo, NH-D14, H80i, and H100i respectively.

That is with a 150 watt load. An overclocked 8320/8350 will approach 220 watts as they effectively become 9370's and 9590's at 4.5 GHz and above. And at that wattage they put out loads of heat and the noctua nh-d14 will will scale while the 212 won't.
 
Saying that it won't scale is an awfully bold statement. Lets do the math out on this shall we, you'll see just how well they do scale and I can even tell you how hot a NH-D14 and Evo will run with a 250W load with decent accuracy. Heatsinks with a certain level of air flow perform at a certain heat dissipation at a certain temperature which comes out in C/W or W/C, this is fairly constant across the temperature range as long as airflow remains constant so you can pretty reliably guess what the temp will be.

With both set to high fan the NH-D14 shows 0.097 C/W and 0.102 C/W at 150W and 85W respectively, those values are about 5% apart. The Hyper 212 Evo is 0.106 C/W and 0.109 C/W at 150W and 85W respectively, thats only about a 3% variance so the guess will be a bit more accurate with that.

With those numbers and a 250W load I'd expect the NH-D14 to be 24.2-25.5C above ambient, and the Hyper 212 Evo to be 26.5-27.3C above ambient, that is surprisingly close considering how different they are in size. Now this also gets significantly closer if you set up the Hyper 212 Evo with a push pull fan configuration as that will increase airflow and frostytech only tests with the fan that ships. Realistically, again with a 40C case that puts you at ~64C best case for the NH-D14 and around 68C worst case for the Hyper Evo, not too bad for a cheap little tower cooler eh?


You can say whatever you want, and believe whatever you want, but the numbers say there isn't a ton of difference.
