Hello,
I have decided to build my own killer box. I have built a number servers but never a desktop .

I am building a box with 2 x Xeon 3.2 800FSB's

the MB is a super Micro x7dal-e

The problem i am having is noise. When this thing powers on it is ridiculously loud

Some of the problem is the case fans and i am looking at some quieter alternatives. But also the cpu fans are really noisy.

I do not think i am ready for the h20 solution yet. They all look pretty complex. The problem that i am having is that i have two processors on the mb so a lot of these coolers like the Zalman CNPS9500 i think are going to be to big and get in each others way

So i am looking for any advise or ideas

Thanks
Randy

First of all, Even if you were to get the Zalman cooler, it wouldn't fit unless you had LGA771 mounting brackets, and AFAIK there are none for that cooler.

If you aren't ready for a liquid cooling solution then you should look at some of the offerings from Swiftech or ThermalRight. ThermalRight is coming out with a new xeon heatsink in addition to their current one sometime in January.
Their current heatsink for the Xeons is SI-9XV and the Swiftech one is the MCX-VPro

Also look at coolers that are designed for S604/603 since the mounting holes are at the same location, just make sure the coolers can handle the thermal output, most if not all should be able to, but it never hurts to check first.

If you decide to go water cooling after all, I would suggest getting Swiftechs' Apogee water block (It's up to the performance of the Storm, but 1/2 the cost and better for multi-processor scenarios b/c of it's less restrictive design.) A good pump would be the Danger Den D5 or Swiftech MCP 655 (the same pump, different power connection). For the Rads you can go with almost any good company like DD or Swiftech, I would recommend a triple rad or something similar.

HTH, Good Luck.

All I can suggest is water cooling. For as little noise as possible, this is your only option.I can assure you that wc is not nearly as complicated as they make it look, and for the money spent, well let's just say you will be happy.Low noise and awesome cooling. That my friend is water cooling.Just my opinion on the matter.Goodluck.
