Cooling question (liquid cooling)

Hey all,

Just a quick question about liquid cooling. My current CPU is an AMD Fx 8120 and I would like to upgrade to the Fx 8350. I currently have an Asetek LCLC cooler on the CPU as well as a case fan, and I was basically wondering whether I would be able to effectively cool the 8350 using the LCLC?

So I'm thinking that you need to cool because the components heat up. And they heat up roughly proportionally to how much power a component uses? It seems that the fx 8350 tends to use less power than the 8130 according to internet power comparison sites. Therefore why is it that if the LCLC works for the 8120 it wouldn't for the 8350?

No, but my question was about the fact that I want to upgrade to the 8350 from an 8120 and I currently have the asetek LCLC. Will that cooler suffice for the 8350?

Short answer is if you are not planning to OC a lot, you should get an air cooler like the hyper 212 like he said above. But if you are planning to OC over 4.3GHz, then you should get liquid cooling, either get the H100i or like the Kraken X61 or something. I didn't mention an air cooler because you said liquid cooling in your title. But I personally prefer liquid cooling for more room for my RAM and my entire case so it's easier for the air flow to move like it is suppose to.

I see, thanks. The thing is though that my previous build already had the asetek LCLC which manages well for the FX 8120. All I need to know is whether the FX 8350 will generate a lot more heat than the 8120, and if so, will the LCLC which I already have be able to cope? A lot of comparisons online between the two CPUs suggest that actually the 8350 uses less power when both idle and loading than the 8120. If so, wouldnt;s that mean that it would actually require less cooling in the first place?

What is your whole build right now?
Yes AMD CPUs get pretty hot since they arent built on a smaller nm. But other than that unless you planning on really pushing the CPU or even overclocking you might be fine. Depends on the case and amount of airflow you have in the case, especially since the LCLC is an older cooler and some air coolers preform better.

My current build is the following:
Motherboard: m5-a78L-m USB 3
CPU: amd fx 8120 not overclocked
Gpu: Radeon 7850
Memory: 8GB ram
Case: cooler master storm enforcer
Cooling: fan and asetek LCLC liquid cooler
Power: 500W PSU

So yeah I want to upgrade the CPU to the Fx 8350 and the graphics card to the Radeon R9 280x. I also will have to upgrade the PSU to accommodate the more power hungry components. I wouldn't really be interested initially in overclocking, but I can never say never. Since the LCLC handles the 8120 fine, (I bought the computer before as a whole) I was wondering whether it is actually necessary to upgrade the cooling even if the 8350 doesn't produce much more heat than the 8120. I stress that obviously if the 8350 produced the same heat as the 8120 then the LCLC would obviously work again fine. If it generates significantly more then I may have to upgrade to a better fan cooler. That's really my main question. Thanks :)

Yes, that should work, the case should have decent airflow and if the cooler already fits even better. First off you would NEED a new power supply. Idk what brand you have but that 500W woudnt work with the 8350(Overclocked) and a R9 280X. I would suggest something going 700W 80plus Gold or Bronze if gold is to expensive.
If you find out after this that the cooler you have isnt working i would suggest the Corsair H100i, Great cooler its what i use and it keeps my Chip under 60C on full load sometimes and i have mine overclocked to 3.8GHz. Its a great setup but it is a bit large and im not sure it would fit in your case also i picked mine up almost a year ago for only $89 and im sure you can find them pretty cheap if you keep an eye out.
