Hi all, I am doing all right with my Dell XPS Studio 9100. However, I'm looking for some advice on cooling solutions for this computer. I have had to replace a CPU and a hard drive in the past 3 years that I've had this computer due to overheating problems. I am in the market for upgrades to the fans on the machine. I have had to have the case cover on the computer off because with it on it turns my computer into a sauna.

I have no problem running most games and applications on the computer, but some games really stress the GPU and drive the temperature up into the 70Cs sometimes. I am not a hardware expert and wouldn't know where to look for specific upgrades for this computer. I have heard of some people (and read posts on here to that effect) of people upgrading the fans and other components on this particular machine.

I hope some of the regulars here can help me with specific advice.

For the CPU I would buy a CPU cooler. I guarentee you are using the stock one right now. I suggest getting the CM TX3.. As for fans you can get one case fan I believe with that case... For one fan I would make it exhaust and it would have to be this one:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608026&cm_re=noctua-_-35-608-026-_-Product

Thanks for the recommendations. I've added both items to my Amazon.com wishlist (since they are cheaper there) and will buy them asap :)

Hello,

I'm wondering whether you ever updated the cooling. I have an XPS 9100 and would like to upgrade the CPU cooler.

Had no need to - I got a brand spanking new gaming rig for my birthday last year 😉 top of the line parts, liquid cooling included :)

Glad to hear it.

I'm trying to determine which CPU cooler is compatible. I just bought a pretty stripped down 9100 on eBay and salvaged the better parts from my old 9100. Heat was always an issue; that's why I want to address this asap.

Good luck with the rig.

OK, thanks to MasterDell for steering me in the right direction. Right now it appears I have two viable choices, neither of which require that the motherboard be removed. They are both around $30:

Deepcool Gammaxx 400 CPU Air Cooler

or

Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler

There's no spec for the power consumption on the Deepcool, but the Coolmaster lists a spec of 180 TDP. I know what that stands for, but don't really know what it means. If it's relevant my PSU is 525 W. My power meter usually reads around 275-300W. Again, I don't suspect power draw is an issue with these, but thought I should mention the PSU spec.
