I added price checking thingy but i'm not sure if they'll work

Currently if ur looking for a card at the range of $0-$150
GeForce 4 Ti4200 is the best choice, but if ur desprate for DX9 support FX5200Ultra is good too ATi gets wasted in the "cheap ass" section. If ur a stubborn fanATic 9200Pro is a good choice.

Exactly how slow is the FX5200? How does it compare to my Radeon 9000? I want to upgrade to DirectX 9 support but have at least the same performance. ATI doesn't have cheap DirectX 9 boards so is this a good investment?

the truth is, u dont need DX9 to run DX9 games like HL2, Doom3 etc..... If ur cheap and u want to play future games Ti4200 is a much better choice, or even better a 9500 non-pro FX5200Ultra's slowness is over emiphased, it does perform "ok" i mean it's not like u wont be able to run normal games with it but Doom3 like games will most likely kill it... why? cause FX5200Ultra has the ability to process the DX9 stuff in Doom3 which make FX5200 even slower than most DX8 card cause card like Ti4200 because they don't process the DX9 eyecandys.

u understand now??

I'm supportin ya.

I agree 4200 rox!!!

Athlon 1700+, Epox 8RDA (NForce2), Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 80GB 8MB cache, 2x256mb Crucial PC2100 in Dual DDR, Geforce 3, Audigy, Z560s, MX500

Chances are you'd even lose performance when you switch to the FX5200, and further on in DX9 games you will enjoy a slide-show.

Sigh... I want the DirectX 9 for graphics programming, not for playing games. I do know that I don't need DirectX 9 support for those games. I just wanted to know if the FX5200 performed slower than the Radeon 9000 for DirectX 8.1 functionality. If it does then it's better for me not to upgrade at all as I'm a poor student.

You understand now?

Ok Ok, you want more than a pat on the back.
Two beer and your choice of a bag of pretzels or cheesies!

Thank you for your appraisal of the low end video market.
Eagerly awaiting further installments.

Sincerely....

The loving are the daring!

Actually you would NOT be as happy programming DX 9 with an FX as you would with an ATi. Dave can attest to that.

There are three types of buyer
Cheapass buyers (Phial~~~lol j/k)
Kind rich buyers (Me)
RICH ASS BUYER (Venom guy)
now that's continue with the "Kinda rich buyers" (me!)

Kinda Rich buyers
Price Range: $ 150- $300
Available cards:
nVidia GeForce 4 Ti4800
nVidia GeForce 4 Ti4800SE

ATi Radeon 9500 non-pro/pro
ATi Radeon 9600 non-pro/pro
ATi Radeon 9700 non-pro
Matrox Millennium P750

much smaller list eh?
but let's narrow it down anyways~~ wait i can't.....they're all good~
now let's list Pros and Cons

nVidia GeForce 4 Ti4800 (based on the Ti4600)
Pro- Cheap, runs most games smoothly without AA and AF
Con- Get wasted by the Radeons, no DX9 support

(no results, only Ti4800SE)

nVidia GeForce 4 Ti4800SE (based on the Ti4400)
Pro- Cheap, runs most games smoothly without AA and AF
Con- Get wasted by the Radeons, no DX9 support, not really worth it's price anymore

<A HREF="http://www.bizrate.com/buy/products__search_box--1,keyword--nVidia+GeForce+4+Ti4800SE,cat_id--405,ir--914.html" target="_new">http://www.bizrate.com/buy/products__search_box--1,keyword--nVidia+GeForce+4+Ti4800SE,cat_id--405,ir--914.html</A>

nVidia GeForce FX 5600 128mb/256mb
Pro- DX9 support, kinda cheap now, does pretty "ok" when AA and AF are on
Con- still gets wasted by the Radeons, crappy overclocking, unpopular, 256mb useless(more on that later)

(bizrate sucks, but i can't link pricewatch) no results

nVidia GeForce FX 5600Ultra
Pro- Finally a Card that's close to the 9500, DX9 support
Con-still gets beaten and get pwned when AA and AF is one, bad for overclocking, expensive

<A HREF="http:// http://www.bizrate.com/buy/products__search_box--1,keyword--nVidia+GeForce+FX+5600+Ultra,cat_id--405,ir--277.html " target="_new">http:// http://www.bizrate.com/buy/products__search_box--1,keyword--nVidia+GeForce+FX+5600+Ultra,cat_id--405,ir--277.html </A>

nVidia GeForce FX 5600Ultra Rev2.0
Pro- Finally a card that can beat the 9500pro and 9600pro, DX9 support, flip-chip design makes it overclock alot better, bling bling HSFs
Con- Still gets killed my 9700 non-pro, expensive, hard to find, easily mistaken cause u can't see the difference between Rev 1 and 2

<A HREF="http://www.bizrate.com/buy/products__search_box--1,keyword--nVidia+GeForce+FX+5600+Ultra,cat_id--405,ir--277.html" target="_new">http://www.bizrate.com/buy/products__search_box--1,keyword--nVidia+GeForce+FX+5600+Ultra,cat_id--405,ir--277.html</A>
(looks around the Rev2.0 have the new flip-chip and it's clocked 400/800)

ATi Radeon 9500 non-pro/pro
Pro- wastes anything from 9600Ultra down, non-pro can be modded to 9700, good overclocking ability, price reasonable, DX9 support
Con- hard to find, no bling bling fan

<A HREF="http://www.bizrate.com/buy/products__search_box--1,keyword--ATi+Radeon+9500,cat_id--405,SEARCH_GO.x--6,SEARCH_GO.y--6,ir--610.html" target="_new">http://www.bizrate.com/buy/products__search_box--1,keyword--ATi+Radeon+9500,cat_id--405,SEARCH_GO.x--6,SEARCH_GO.y--6,ir--610.html</A>

ATi Radeon 9600 non-pro/pro
Pro- DX9 support perform only a bit worse than 9500pro, awesome overclocking ability
Con- 4 pipelines, not as fast as 9500pro, no bling bling fan

<A HREF="http://www.bizrate.com/marketplace/search/search__cat_id--405,prod_id--7577467,de_id--200,keyword--ATi Radeon 9600,prerd--1,ir--59.html" target="_new">http://www.bizrate.com/marketplace/search/search__cat_id--405,prod_id--7577467,de_id--200,keyword--ATi Radeon 9600,prerd--1,ir--59.html</A>

ATi Radeon 9700 non-pro
Pro- THE BEST CARD in this class, wastes anything FX5800Ultra down!, DX9 support, high end card that's cheap
Con- still the most expensive in its class, hard to find

<A HREF="http://www.bizrate.com/buy/products__search_box--1,keyword--ATi+Radeon+9700,cat_id--405,SEARCH_GO.x--28,SEARCH_GO.y--17,ir--677.html" target="_new">http://www.bizrate.com/buy/products__search_box--1,keyword--ATi+Radeon+9700,cat_id--405,SEARCH_GO.x--28,SEARCH_GO.y--17,ir--677.html</A>

Matrox Millennium P750
Pro- Image quality will make u think the real world looks bad, Special Filtering makes thing look good, real good
Con- asking this card to do gaming is like ask a baby to carry a 100kg sumo wrestler up the hill, expensive

<A HREF="http://www.bizrate.com/buy/products__cat_id--460103,keyword--Matrox Millennium P750,sfc--1.html" target="_new">http://www.bizrate.com/buy/products__cat_id--460103,keyword--Matrox Millennium P750,sfc--1.html</A>

i know bizrate sucks ass, but i cant link price watch, anyone got any better sites??

Currently if ur looking for a card at the range of $150-$350, ATi Radeon is your best choice across the board except FX5600Ultra Rev2.0 and only Rev2.0. nVidia got pwned here. If u dont wanna spend $300, Radeon 9500pro/non-pro is the best choice, and 9500no-pro can be modded into the 9700 non-pro. 9600pro is the easiest to find and it overclocks really well.If u can find a FX5600Ultra Rev2.0 it's also a great choice. Too bad ATi and Matrox cards dont have bling blings.

Top 3
1.Radeon 9700 non-pro
2.Radeon 9600pro
3.Radeon 9500pro and GeForce FX 5600Ultra ties

Recommanded brands
nVidia- PNY, Gainward,Leadtek, ASUS, MSI
ATi- BBA, Hercules

Did you forget the 9800 nonpro? Or you not including pricewatch stuffs?
I dunno what it goes for on bizrate but it can be found for $240 shipped... best sub $300 deal IMHO. It would be my choice if I was to need a video card today.
