Copied data off crashed drive but now the data is unreadable

If you still have the crashed HDD, you could re-install it to your computer and use TestDisk to recover the data. TestDisk is free, DOS-based, and I have used it successfully to recover files from a crashing HDD and to recover RAID1s. All the data files were recovered, but not all photos could be recovered - probably because they were on the bad sectors.

It could be that the crash afected the files , but you won't know for sure untill you try the solution suggested by treefrog.
