Question Copying Hard drive

Can I drag and drop hard drive to copy it and not use carbon copy cloner if I don't want it to be bootable. I can use SHIFT key while dragging and dropping?

The bootable file isn't very large what is the purpose of avoiding it as a bootable drive?
