Greetings Tom's,

I'm asking this question based off a YouTube video I saw that had a Core 2 Duo on a Dell Inspiron 2200 . I have this laptop with a Pentium M 765, and I started to wonder, can I put a C2D on this rig?

I don't know if the admins will allow me, but here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efcX76CQ08Y - it even has the C2D sticker on it.

I realize that the performance of the processor is capped by the make of the mobo, but if there is a C2D socket 479 out there, can I put it in this laptop? Are there any risks associated with it?

Thanks!

rigs are home builds. not pre-made laptops or pc's
and no you cant just pop another chip in your lappy. the 1 thats in is most likely soldered to the board or socket.
you also have to take into account the thermals. as lappys are made to fairly tight specifications its unlikely it would be able to handle the extra thermal output of a higher end cpu.

the inspiron 2200 shipped in 2005 with the celeron m or pentium m. no core 2 duo parts till 2007

And the CPU in the 2200 isn't soldered, it's socketed (I've popped my stock one for a 765 a couple of years back).

Just puzzled how the kid got a C2D in the thing.

Intel used the same physical socket, but changed the electrical configuration going from Socket 479 to Socket M and Socket P. Mobile Core 2 processors should not be compatible with this laptop.

It's hard to tell if that laptop is actually running a C2D just from the video. The Core 2 Duo sticker could have been bought separately and stuck on there, so that makes me a bit skeptical.
