I am planning on upgrading the with a core 2 duo or pentium m (about 2ghz) and the 40gb hdd with ssd (I know IDE SSDs are quite slow but the current HDD is making squeaking noises and is on it's last legs, like hanging on a thread, but made of nylon), both of which come to around £40, same price as the laptop funnily! If I have to deal with a Pentium M, thats ok and don't tell me "It's not worth it" or "It's very difficult" as I have done this before on my nans laptop (same cpu socket and everything) and I'm bored.

Compatibility is exactly the reason that you won't be able to drop anything other than a Pentium or Celeron M in there; the D510 uses Intel's 915GM chipset, and it doesn't support anything other than Pentium M-based chips. The 780 is as good as it gets, I'm afraid. The 915GM also has SATA support, but that doesn't really help you since the D510 doesn't.
Out of curiosity, what's your current CPU? I know for sure that you won't be able to drop a Core 2 Duo in there, but you should be able to drop a Pentium M 780 (2.27GHz) for the best possible performance. As for the SSD, as long as it's IDE it'll work fine, but finding one will be up to you :)
