I have Intel D865GLC motherboard. It has mPGA478 socket and Pentium 4 3 GHZ HT processor. My processor isn't enough for even daily use. Thus, I want to change it. Firstly, I looked for Intel's official support webpage.

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/boards-and-kits/desktop-boards/000006655.html

In there, maximum support of my motherboard is Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.4 GHz and 2 MB L3 Cache. Finding this processor is fairly difficult. There are only 1-2 Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.4 GHz on the online shopping and the cheapest is 299 USD. This is quite expensive, so there is only a choice. Core 2 Duo. I looked a lot of webpages, but I haven't managed to find any precise info yet. Someone says take risk and try it, other one says definitely not work, other one says mechanically fit but electrically not fit. I don't know what should I do against these answers. Finally, I looked Game-Debate. Game-Debate says several of Core 2 Duo's will fit D865GLC. (T2050 and T5250.)

Although this, I'm still not sure about Core 2 Duo compability of D865GLC. Thus, I also looked chipset infos. My chipset is 865G. I looked for CPU compability of my chipset. In wikipedia, my chipset seems support the Core 2.

Is chipset important for processor compability of motherboard? And finally, Game-Debate says Core 2 Duo T2050 and T5250 will fit D865GLC I said it above. We assume it is correct. However, T2050 and T5250 aren't worth to pay them. Their clock speeds and caches are low. T6600 and T9500 are using the same socket with T2050 and T5250. Thus, can I use T6600 or T9500? T6600 and T9500 use 35 W power. My Pentium 4 uses 85 W power. Are motherboard and socket defining power for processor? In addition to this, will my motherboard be damaged if Core 2 duo doesn't work on my mother board? Or will life of my mobo be reduced? Thanks answers for anyway.

Note: Please don't answer like 'Buy new motherboard or new system.' I'm fine for my motherboard. I want to upgrade it to the its maximum degree.

No. the core 2 duo will not work on that board most likely If it was a forum post by a person who has photo evidence I would believe it would work and yes the chipset compability is important for the cpu, but in my opinion I really doubt it will work because when you go to intel web site for the t2050 ppga478 is different form socket 478 on the desktop yes it will fit in the mpga478 know as socket 478 they are different slightly also when intel says this board supports only this cpu unless there a bios update then you are pretty much stuck with the Pentium 4 . And I understand that you don't like the answer "Buy a new motherboard" because a lot of people tell me that too. especially my laptop, the thing is this board is a 478, I still consider 478 a good platform for server use and small business computing but really would you rather keep trying to keep it fast or get something that you can just put in and not play mind games with, because I would suggest just get a Amd 939 board 2 reasons 1 most used ddr400 that the socket 478 uses and 2 it platform has dual cores that are super cheap and boards are cheap. It up to you really what to do.

Thanks for your answer!

PPGA478 seems to be different from mPGA478, but Pentium 4 Extreme Edition SL7CH 3.4 GHz also seems to use PPGA478 socket. My motherboard supports Pentium 4 Extreme Edition SL7CH 3.4 GHz. Does it mean my motherboard support some PPGA478 processors?

I think that a miss type if you look here http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SL7CH.html at socket type it says Socket 478 (mPGA478B) so no sadly. ppga478 is the laptop version of the socket 478 the only company I know that does laptop and desktop cpu on the same socket was amd socket 754.

According to Intel's official webpage, there is only a 478 and it is PPGA478 mate.

https://communities.intel.com/thread/12441 look here it says ppga will not work and why they don't. I know that the Pentium 4 extreme says but they only made it for socket 478 because of the amount of heat it makes.
