core 2 quad q6600 2.4 ghz to core 2 extreme qx6850

i want to upgrade my lga 775 cpu to a core 2 extreme qx6850. the processor costs around 140 dollars but is it worth the upgrade? and what cooler is good to cool the cpu for under 70 dollars? i prefer a water cooler. thanks

That shows the q6600 against a extreme qx9770, which has more cache, faster clock speed and faster FSB than the 6850, and the performance gain isn't that much.

For $140 plus the $70 you want to spend on cooling, for $210 you could get a new AMD FX-6300, motherboard and maybe an Evo 212 fan to OC it providing you already have DDR3 ram and look at the difference.

i' still have a Q600, qx6800 and a q9650.
for every day use there is no difference between the Q6600 and the Qx6850.
you do see a little difference in game play but it's not much (1 or 2 fps)

the qx6850 runs a lot hotter tho. i had to put a arctic cooler on my Qx6800 just to keep noise down.

Q6600 is still a viable chip, 3.2-3.6 Ghz is quite easy with a decent cooler. A high end cooler would let you push it to 4.0 or higher.

For $70 something link a Noctua DH-14 or a Phanteks cooler would beat out most liquid coolers. Might be able to squeeze an h60 or eqivalent closed loop cooler for 70 as well.

how will i overclock mu cpu, still have the xps 420, i found that setfsb does the job very well but i dont know how to use the program, and ill just buy the cooler no need for a upgrade then.

Overclocking is done from the BIOS in general. If you can modify the FSB through software, and if it changes a few other things as well, you should be able to run it up pretty high.

You can not overclock XPS 420 in BIOS - it is locked. Only SetFSB or BSEL pin mode using conductive ink.
BSEL mode will let you overclock from 2.4GHz to 3.0GHZ, not so difficult job.
