I recently took a slightly older pc and fixed it up, attempting to make it a decent mid range gaming machine. Waiting on the last part now and just wondering, what kind of performance can I expect? Its got a core 2 quad q6600 clocked at 2.4 ghz (but who keeps it there anyways?) and I upgraded the ram to 4 gigs, and put a Radeon R9 270 video card. Im just waiting on the power supply now (500w). What kind of performance can I expect with the aging processor?

I overclocked to 3.0 ghz and I could play csgo at 40-60 fps. Anything cpu heavy will give you problems and it will most definitely be your bottleneck. I upgraded to an i7 but kept the same graphics card and I consistently can keep the fps above 100 in csgo. It should also be noted that you will only be able to get about half of your speed out of an ssd (if you have one) using the q6600.

You should be able to play new games, but you are probably closer to a low end gaming machine.

A Q6600 does surprinsingly well in a lot of games, even with 4GB of RAM. I can play games like Need for speed (mw 2012 or rivals 2013), CS:GO games like that. Ofcourse not the most heavy games but it does really well, in a lot of games at lowered settings. And im just running it at stock speed because of cooling problems 🙁 .

Its a Stepping B revision GO

Then you're in luck! The G0 is one of my old favorites. I've overclocked many of them. They were the fastest Quad's back in the day. The worst ones would do 3.4, while the upper 10% would do 3.8. A select few Q6700's would reaching 3.9 or even 4.0.

3.6 was very common for the Q6600 G0. When you consider the processor runs at 2.4 stock and can reach 3.6, that's a 50% overclock, which is quite remarkable by today's standards.

Do you have a decent socket 775 cooler?

Yeah I have a decent cooler
