I have an older computer (XPS 410) with a Core 2 Quad Q6700 (LGA 775). Theoretically, what would happen if I put a Xeon X3380 in there? would it work?

Solution
XPS 410 uses an nVidia nForce 4 chipset from 2005 which nobody has ever reported to work. The two generations newer XPS 720 with nForce 680i chipset is verified to not work with any 45nm chips.

The maximum FSB of the chipset is also 1066 so there's no point even attempting a BSEL padmod to 1333 which would in other Dells run the Q6700 at 3.33GHz if you also did a VID mod to up the voltage.

So the simple answer is no.
with a working lga 775 usually you try to make work a lga 771 xeon but idealllythe xeon is faster and overclockable to make it worth to be done the modification, but if the xeon is not overclokcable and the one you have is decent, it is not a ideal upgrade
