as the title states, my fx 6350(six core) cpu clocked at 3.9ghz isn't holding out the best on bf1 etc given its age. so I was thinking of upgrading. bf1 recommends a 8350 so I thought maybe that would be a good idea. however I am also considering a core i3 6100 3.7ghz cpu. I think this would be the better due to the upgrades that could be done in the future but this means new mobo and os. also I was considering i5 6500. would the i3 give good results??

my specs:
amd fx 6350 six core 3.9ghz
gtx 960 2gb gddr5
8gb ddr3 1600mhz
gigabyte 78lmt-usb3
1tb hdd
500w kolink psu

Solution
The i3 would give decent results..... but the i5-6500 would be the better choice for BF1, BF1 definitely shows some gains from a 'true' quad-core vs a dual core + hyper-threading.

Here was a thread from yesterday: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3229473/6100-gtx-1060-6500-gtx-1050ti.html

I linked some benchmarks in there (albeit with 1050's & 1050TI's), showing gains for the i5. Certainly respectable performance from the i3 though.

Note though, moving to Skylake you'd need a new motherboard & RAM (DDR4) in addition to the CPU.... and I'd recommend replacing that PSU while you're at it. Doesn't make for a cheap upgrade. Is the 6350 really holding you back *THAT* much? You might be better off/cheaper investing in...

Solution
i3 will beat the 8350 at everything except things like video editing that will actually utilize all its threads. No amount of overclock can overcome the 8350's inefficiency over the 4 year newer technology in skylake intel chips.

Naturally the i5 will be that much better over an i3 if you can swing it.
