the core i5 is the better chip and it comes on the newer platform there is really no debate here, it runs cooler, it is much faster, and has a much better upgrade path since the socket it comes on is still new the core 2 quad is a very good chip but at this point in time if you are building from scratch there is no point in buying it.
The socket 1156 has no upgrade path, the core i5 is more powerful however. It has no upgrade path because your stuck with core i5 750/i7 860/870, you can't get a i5 630 because it won't work, different chipset

The New 32nm chips will work on P55 You just cant use onboard graphics and might require a bios update.
q9550 if you have lga775; if building from scratch, socket 1336 is your choice. It has a better upgrade path & will suport 6 core chips coming out this year.

sigh....the socket 1156 p55 can carry even the new i3's and dual core i5's and in many cases simply requires a BIOS update for the IGP also ,the 1366 socket is simply the high end version intel already confirmed that they plan to carry the 1156 socket for sometime, don't spread misinformation
