Core i7 3770K Cannot boot to / or install windows

I've recently acquired some components from a friend, which is a ASUS P8P67 motherboard, a Core i5 2500K and a Core i7 3770K. When i have the 3770K installed it will POST and go into bios all fine, voltages and temperatures all seem fine. but the second i try and boot into windows it will freeze and restart, same outcome when i try and reinstall windows with this CPU. my 2500K i5 on the other hand performs perfectly fine with this motherboard. Could this be a compatibility issue? or is my i7 3770K toast. can anyone help me out?

Did you check the BIOS version for being compatible with the 3rd-gen CPU? https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8P67/HelpDesk_CPU/

Yes i've checked ASUS's website and it says on there it fully supports the CPU. Also the BIOS is updated to the latest version.
