I would lean towards the Intel. You'd loose two cores (but there's still 6 which is plenty) but you'll get a much higher clock speed from the Intel as well as a better IPC. I'd also trust Intel a little more for reliability and compatibility with other components from past experience

Just my two cents!

Cheers
I doubt either would be a slouch at any role you throw at either, truthfully.... ; although if leaning towards many cores for reasonable cost, most opt for the 1700 running at 1800X speeds to save $150-$175 or so...

If your simulations utilize all cores, perhaps the R7 will fare better, but, if clock speed still is equally important, the 8700X might fare slightly better in speed, you'd have to research those specific software comparisons perhaps at forums that specialize in such usage comparisons...

Not always...Some programs prefer more cores regardless (within reason) clock speed, but others like premier pro would be happier with a few less cores but a higher single core performance. Most lean this way with a balanced CPU. I don't think you'd go wrong with either but I still stand by the Intel for best performance overall
