Core i7 965 Extreme vs Core 2 Extreme QX9775

I had question, I tryed building the most expensive/highest end/most powerful alienware computer and tried the same thing with a dell XPS and in both of them, the best processor option you can get is a Core i7 965 Extreme, I thought this this was the highest end gaming processor currrently. However, the Core 2 Extreme Qx9775 costs wayyy more, like 400-500 bucks more and has higher clock speed????am i missing something?Anybody explain which one is better and why?

By all means, the i7 is better. The QX9775, although a very good chip, is yestertech and its current socket (LGA 775) has had no new processor releases except for low power versions of the current CPU's.
There are several benchmarks that can be easily found with google which compare the QX9775 with the i7 965 extreme. Most likely the reason the QX9775 is more expensive is either they didn't update prices or the initial cost for making the QX9775 was too high, which therefor doesn't allow a substantial cut-down in price.

I heard that the QX sereis of CPUs (With an X) have unlocked multipliers for easy overclocking. Something like AMD's Black Edition CPUs. But Core i7 has extremely nice multitasking capabilites, and since it has HT, I think its 8 cores. (4 virtual), maybe not sure.

I know that the i7 965 extreme murders the qx9775 in benchmarks and stuff, i just dont understand why a qx9775 is so much more expensive even though its older and weaker.

Because the price never dropped.

Oh, and the 9770 (the LGA 775 version of the 9775) isn't clocked higher - they are both clocked at 3.2GHz, and the i7 actually runs at 3.33 most of the time (if you leave it on stock clocks) due to turbo mode.

If you had a high-end Core2 configuration (like many people does), and you want to upgrade the CPU in it, but not change your motherboard (nearly 500$ at high end) and probably other hardware, then you have to choose QX9775 so you will pay that money to the dealer. This is similar to AGP and PCI-E cards' prices or IDE and SATA or DDR1 and DDR2. Therefore the so called "old technology" can be priced higher because of the cost of upgrading other hardware.
