Clock for clock, which is faster, the Core i7 980X Nehalem, or the Core i7 3770k Ivy Bridge?

Is there a noticeable difference in gaming?

The 3770K is superior but the 980X is still a solid CPU. Not worth an upgrade IMO, but if you are buying one or the other now get the 3770K.

Wont be that big of a difference in most games.

The short answer is no. It's the best processor out there for gaming. Even the 3570K i5 won't.

Having said that, at lower resolutions, your CPU is likely to limit frame rates before the GPUs do. This would be true of any CPU. To minimize this effect, and take full advantage of all that graphical power, you should try to use a monitor setup that allows for resolutions greater than 1920x1080.
