Hi I was just wondering if anyone can tell me the difference between cores and sockets in terms of performance or benefit. Does, say an Athlon 64 3200+ Winchester perform better than an Athlon 64 3200+ Clawhammer? Also would a socket 939 perform better than a socket 754? If so, by how much and is this generally worth the higer cost?

It doesn't really matter which cores or which sockets the performance of an athlon 64 lies on the mobo & the chipset itself. In benchmarks all 3200+ A64's seems to perform almost the same using the nforce3 chipset. You cannot really tell which socket or which core is faster as the one will beat the other and the other will beat the one.

Thanks for your information. I was just wondering then does a certain core or socket overclock better? I have noticed that the Winchesters are consistently higher priced than Clawhammers and 939's are pricer than 754. I was just curious of why that was.

All Athlon 64's are good overclockers. the overclockability of it depends on a good fan & heatsink, PSU & mobo.

that's because winchester cores are base on 90nm process and the clawhammers are base on 130nm process production which is outdated.

base on my perspective 939's are expensive because of the chipsets it use, almost all 939's uses the nforce4 chipsets & they comes w/ PCI e.

Hello,

The 939 Venice/ SanDiego outperform their 754 counterparts due to dual channel and better memory support.

Opteron 939 can outperform its single and dual core respectively due to higher chip quality, better OC, lower temps, and lower voltage. Now they are more expensive though.

Definately get a socket 939, the dual channel memory makes a difference. Also, get a Venice or San Diego core. They run on a smaller (cooler, less energy consumping) core, and one has more cache.

Opteron is the best choice if you want to spend the money.
