Cores, general programs and games??

I've read claims that more cores help with general use whilst gaming.
Things like having a second monitor with a many tabbed chrome window open, whilst playing a youtube mix in the back ground. Also having multiple game clients open, and communication programs running (skype, oovoo, discord, teamspeak) This is my general use scenario... I have turned off cores and hyper threading with my 5820k and have noticed hicups, but this could be due to some other circumstance I haven't accounted for.
Has anyone come across any concrete data about such a thing?
 
With the processors that are currently out, you will notice hiccups but you will not see major dips simply because of how powerful the upper echelons are in relation to how powerful they need to be to actually run a game and a tab of chrome. It's a pretty easy thing to prove in general theory without needing to even go into concrete data. Say you decide to leave HT up, you have 12T. For sake of simplicity, you have 12 programs that need to be run, and each of them only takes a single thread. Each operation can take a thread. You disable HT. You have 6T, you have 12 programs that need to be run. 6 of them have to wait depending on how the CPU schedules them. The "waiting" will likely be very very slight, noticed as "hiccups", but it is due to one of the programs needing to wait while another program is scheduled, and executed. During this time, CPU time is not being used on this program; ergo it will "hiccup".

Is there a particular reason you're inquiring about concrete data?

Yeah, the reason being that my current mobo has become slightly faulty, in that the usb 2.0 controller is dead. Anything I plug into it gives me an 'unknown USB device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)'
It's really just a slight annoyance as things like internal lights no longer work and my headphone amp doesn't like usb 3.0 as it occasionally spazes out with a harsh static noise. Nothing works when plugged into ubs 2 ports even when in bios.

I have a few options to consider, spend a stupid amount on a new x99 mobo, which is probably going to be replaced by intel soon, wait for someone trying to offload one for stupid cheap, stick it out with my headphones screeching in my ears at times, while I wait for intels new offerings or ryzen 2.0. Or sell my whole setup now and choose right now between 1151 or am4, 1151 seems like the obvious choice, except for the fact it's also probably winding down and am4 will allow me to replace the cpu down the line without getting a new mobo. So I was hoping for 'concrete' data in order to see if ryzen might
fill my osd need of seemless desktop use whilst gaming.

I like being able to alt tab out of a game and be able to open up other programs and all that shit without any hicups. But I also want to play AAA games with high-ultra settings above 100fps at a 1440p res.

As for fixing the usb 2.0 controller option, I've tried all the obvious stuff. Updating drivers, resetting to optimized defaults, bios updating, unpluging sleeved cable extensions and using the default cables. The shit just stopped working over night for no reason, I didn't even turn off the computer.
