Hi,
I have a Win2003 server running terminal services and it has been fine
untill late last week. the spec ic Duel Xeon 2.8, 2Gb Ram 3 x36Gb Scsi
running Raid5. The Clients Log in through remote connection and run a
specific program only allowing them access to that program plus Word 2000.
On thursday they started reporting that it was taking them 10 minutes to log
out of the sessions. On friday they were reporting file access errors and
everything started slowing down to the point that MS Word was nearly
unusable. After taking the command line out I got messages saying that the
session was corrupt and had to be restarted, this never goes away and i
suspect that something is corrupt.
How do i return the license to the server so that when i uninstall the
remote client software i dont loose the licences.

Thanks

John

You can't do this, and it isn't necessary either.
Merely uninstalling and re-installing the rdp client won't remove
your license from the client.
A fresh re-installation of the client OS would obviously destroy
the license (which is stored in the clients registry), but even
then you won't have to worry about the license:

All TS CALs on 2003 have an expiration date. If they are not used
any more, they will expire after 52-89 days. In the meantime, any
new or re-installed client would receive a temporary license,
which lasts for 90 days. So at the latest 1 day before the
temporary license expires, their old license will expire, be
returned to the license pool on the TS Licensing Server, and
become available again to the new or re-installed client.

Thanks for your help. The problem i have is fairly strange, i will look into
resetting the clients up later. It is as if something is taking up a lot of
bandwidth all i use the clients for is our small database program, word and
printing. I wonder if it might be something to do with the print spooling
prosess, how would i check if it is ok.

Thanks

John

Is there anything in the EventLog on the server?
Sounds to me more like a problem on the server than on the
clients.
Since the problem started so sudden, was anything at all changed
on the server prior to the problem?
Do you have the same problem with only one client connecting and
running?

Performance problems can be caused by many things, but file access
errors and warnings about corrupt sessions are *not* common
problems.

Could you have a problem with profile (un)loading and corrupt
profiles? Do you use roaming profiles? a normal one and a TS-
specific one?

Hi vera,
There is nothing in the in the event logs that give indications to an error
and there was nothing added or changed to the server for weeks prior to this
happening. Since the problem started i have made sure that all the upgrades
have been done for both software and hardware, new antivirus and various
other tools installed and run. I have had all the hardware checked and
diagnostics run from Fujitsu on the server.

The clients only have Ts profiles which i think when i visit them later
today i will delete and rebuild to see if the problems go away. The problem
really starts to become a serious issue when i get more than 5 clients
working, This i will also check later.

Thanks for your help

John
