Corrupted External Hard Drive

Hello.

I believe I have a corrupted external hard drive. I've had this WD external hard drive for many years now and sadly, the thought of backing up the files by having another external hard drive never crossed my mind. Well, maybe it did once or twice, but I was too lazy to at that time and thought another tomorrow would do but now that it's corrupted, I'm pretty much doomed. I have probably 5 years worth of photos/videos, 350GB, so imagine how important this is to me to have the files restored.

In this external hard drive, I have all of my photos organized into separate folders. Seems like the videos aren't affected. It's the photos that are. When I click into some photo folders, about half of them open up normally, I'm able to view the photos; however, the other half of the folders, when I click into them, they display little icons that look like white pages with funky font/symbols. When I try to copy and past those workable folders into another external hard drive, they take forever to transfer over, so I usually end up giving up before the files are transferred over.

Symptoms? Well, my computer can detect it and can also open it; however, my computer keeps saying that there are errors on the drive and to repair it. When I click repair, my computer tries to repair it but later says, it wasn't successful in repairing it, so to retry again.

In the last repair my computer attempted to do lasted about 2 hours I would say but I cancelled it because I thought it wasn't going anywhere or may have gotten stuck. When I went to view my external hard drive to see if my folders have become accessible, half of them became little white paper icons, no longer the little yellow folder icons. I hope I didn't lose those files.

My questions are, is my external hard drive corrupted? If it is, is it repairable? What should I do? Those folders that have now become little icons that look like white pages with funky font/symbols, would I be able to repair those and retrieve those photos? My last resort is to seek professional help but decided to post here to try to learn something and perhaps save a bit too in the meantime. Thank you all.

So I was researching some previous threads and someone suggested this free program to recover files and such. http://icare-recovery.com/data-recovery-free.html

Would this program pertain to my issue? I'm mean, the files I want are still there in the external hard drive, they're just no longer folders, they're little white paper icons that I can't click into anymore. And if it does answer my question, which one would I choose?

Your post is well written and I read through it. Yes there are some things that you can do.

First, stop using this disk; do not try to add any files to it because you will overwrite existing data. Get a known good external drive and backup your computer ASAP.

After you backup your computer, download 'RECUVA', free from http://www.piriform.com/recuva/download/standard

Now connect the external drive that is corrupted to the computer and run Recuva on this drive.

The iCare program that you have is also a good one.

Good luck!

Thank you for the prompt reply.

I'm sorry to ask for more directions and clarification but I'm assuming I need to backup my computer just in case I need to recover it right? And I should be doing that normally anyway right?

Since I've never used RECUVA before, how would I know it's working? Or if it resolved my issue? So once it's done running, would I notice a difference in my external hard drive like would the little paper icons return back to being yellow folder icons allowing me to access my photos? And would my computer stop giving me an error message every time I connect the external hard drive?

And as for the icare program, which of the four would I choose for my situation or would all four fit? The Partition Recovery, The Advanced File Recovery, Deep Scan Recovery, and Format Recovery?

Yes, always backup the computer before you make changes. Recuva runs well and is easy enough to use. Try it on a USB flash drive just to get familiar with the program.

As for iCare, use the Advanced File Recovery (I have used Recuva, but not iCare, but such programs are very similar).

Okay, so I downloaded RECUVA and tried to restore the photos. So far, it restores the photos I deleted; however, cannot restore or even detect the photos that are in the folders that have turned into those little white page icons. When I click to choose which drive I want the program to scan and recover, you know how it breaks it down for you, for instance, my external hard drive is on K:, so it breaks K: down to my main folders and sub folders and so forth.

After my computer's last attempt to repair my external hard drive, half of my photo folders have become little white page icons that I cannot click into. I looked up it's properties, it says they're files but I can't open them and certainly, they're no longer folders. So when RECUVA asks me which drive to scan, I click onto my K: drive and it only shows half of my folders, the folders that were not affected by the repair process. The program cannot detect the little white page icons that I wanted to restore.

Second, the unaffected folders, I can still open and view the photos; however, they take forever to transfer. The program does not detect those photos either, which makes sense, since they're still in the hard drive, but I need to find a way to move them out. I could erase them and then have the program recover them in the next scan, but it's so risky. And most importantly, I'm most concerned about the other half of the folders that I can't seem to restore, the little white page ones. They cannot be detected. Yikes, I'm stuck.

Thank you for the sites. Hm, since I'm unable to resolve it, I think I'll just seek professional help since I can't stall on this issue plus I'm just not experienced enough to risk my files. And those sites contain programs with fees anyway; hence, mind as well go all the way if I were to pay for something. I never thought that by allowing my computer to repair my external hard drive would further complicate things and sort of damage my files in a way because I'm pretty scared that I won't be able to restore those folders that have changed icons.

Anyway, just a little FYI, your RECUVA program is such a better program than iCare. I was also using Disk Digger; however, that program didn't really do much in that I had to abort the scan because my external hard drive had too many errors for it to process, so all in call, RECUVA is the better program from the ones I've tried this time around.

Anyway, I'll come back to update this thread once I find a resolution or get one from a professional in a few months from now, I'm assuming.

Thank you again for all of your help and time. I really appreciated it.😀

Wish you the best of luck in your efforts!

Here are some other great free programs from Piriform (pear shaped in Latin):
CCLEANER - http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard (used to be called Crap Cleaner previously) - This will also delete all stored passwords and cookies.
SPECCY - http://www.piriform.com/speccy (this will list all the components of your computer except the PSU)
DEFRAGGLER - http://www.piriform.com/products - Great for hard disks except SSDs. Do not defrag any SSD SSDs never need defrag and in fact defragging an SSD will reduce its life.
