Hi Guys,

Recently completed my new build and while tinkering in my bios, found that although my memory size was correctly registering at 16384mb, my memory frequency was only coming in at 2133mhz.

I imagine that there should be a noticeable improvement between that and the advertised 3000mhz and am wondering if A) that is true and b) how do I accomplish this?

My specs:

1) Gigabyte x170x gaming 7 Mobo
2) Corsair Vengeance ram

Thanks for the help!

Solution
Default speed for DDR4 is 2133. You have to overclock the system to get the higher speeds. It may show improvement in benchmarks but in real world performance for gaming and such it's doubtful you'd be able to tell. If you have a Z170 board you can enable XMP in bios to try and run it at rated speed.

The newb in me assumes that since it didn't default to this automatically, then that means it's the preferred option. Otherwise, it's dangerous to do so.

Is that silly thinking and is it completely okay and again, preferable to increase it to 3000mhz?

As an example, Kingston Hyper X Fury memory are a type that are plug and play and can run at advertised speeds by default when installed but most other brands require XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) settings / overclocking to go past 2133.

Any time you install new DRAM in a mobo it goes to the mobos default, here it's 2133. To run at 300, you enable XMP and select profile 1, also as a note, it may require a slight OC of the CPU to run at 3000
