Corsair H80i V2/CM Hyper 212 EVO enough for a 4790K?

Replacing parts in my old computer bit by bit and I'm now owning a i7-4790K. Initially I wanted to pick up the Corsair H100i V2 cooler but my case does not support 240mm fans at the top or the back so I looked at the H80i V2 instead since that has a 120mm fan.
Reading from reviews, they seem to perform almost the same when it comes to temperature readings with the H100i V2 still slightly better.

Question now is, will the H80i V2 or Hyper 212 EVO still be enough for the i7-4790K and maybe even overclocking?


The new build will consist of the following parts:
Gigabyte GZ-G2 case (old case, can't replace right now)
Intel i7-4790K @4.00 GHz (potentially overclocking if possible)
Corsair H80i V2 or CM Hyper 212 Evo
MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Gaming Edition
16GB RAM 1866 Mhz
Asus Z97-A Motherboard
Win7 64

What the H80 can't escape is the fact that the H100 has more surface area(double that of a single 120mm fan) to dissipate heat. The H80's radiator might be thicker but you're not getting exactly double the thickness. For the interim period, you're fine with an H80 but in retrospect, what's stopping you from getting an air cooler? A Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo can help or if you want to ix things up a bit, look at the Cryorig H7 cooler.

That last question will depend primarily on your overclocks, the sort of voltages you're going to run on the system, the airflow within the case and ofc the ambient air temperature that is feeding the case/radiator. You may also want to read through the watercooling sticky(linked in my sig) and head down to the Closed Loop Cooler's section.

Last point, might want to share the rest of your (full)system's specs to get some more feedback on your endeavor. 😉

We actually do have a Coolermaster Hyper 212 evo in my partners case, however we thought with a new i7-4790K a liquid cooler would be more appropriate. Also, the Hyper 212 evo is quite the squeeze into the case (Gigbyte Gz-G2) but it would still fit okay.
So would a Hyper 212 Evo be better than a H80i?

My budget goes up to £100, so if you have other air coolers/liquid coolers to suggest that have the same size as the two mentioned above then feel free!
