I have seen anecdotes online that some have been able to connect one of the fans directly into the mobo and get a constant rainbow for the LEDs.

I was wondering if anyone could clarify/confirm that is possible. If I didn't need to control the colors, but just wanted light, could I leverage JRGB1, Jrainbow, JCorsair header on my B450 Gaming Carbon Pro AC mobo without the need for a commander pro hub?

No, the JCorsair header is 3-pin, the LL fans are 4-pin RGB connectors. The JCORSAIR would be connected to the RGB Fan Hub and then the LL 120 fan would be connected to the JCORSAIR header.
You could also use a Lighting Node Pro to control the lighting. This will allow you to control the RGB from Corsair's iCue software. The LL fan multi-packs come with a Lighting Node Pro and an RGB Fan Hub - everything you need.
